Percy Moore led an extremely adventurous life. At an early age he left the Cape Colony and headed North to Rhodesia to join the British South Africa Company Police. He was involved in campaigns against hostile natives in Matabeleland in 1893, and later in Mashonaland. In late 1895 to early 1896 he was a member of the ill-fated Jameson Raid into the sovereign territory of the then South African Republic (ZAR). He went on to fight in a number of key battles during the early stages of the Boer War as a member of the Imperial Light Horse regiment, and was wounded in action during the battle at Elandslaargte.
