The IRA in Ireland were also inspired by the tactics of the Boers and used a similar 'flying column' tactic which helped lead to some of Ireland getting independence in the 1920s.

Ladysmith gets its name from Juana María de los Dolores de León Smith also known as Lady Smith, the Spanish wife of Sir Harry Smith who was the Governor of the Cape Colony from 1847 to 1852. In earlier life Harry Smith was an officer in Lord Wellington's legendary 95th Rifles in the Napoleonic Wars where in 1812 he rescued a young Spanish girl (Juana) from drunken British soldiers plundering the Spanish fortress town of Badajoz after a successful siege. The two quickly fell in love and married and lived happily ever after.

You left out the part where the Boers agreed to be annexed in large part because they knew their wives and children were being slowly tortured and starved to death in the concentration camps, and a soldier loses the will to fight when he knows his wife and his children are being tortured and starved to death in a concentration camp

Why did other Europeans volunteer to join the Boers?
@Guthixian_
6 жыл бұрын
David Harrison Who do you mean exactly? The Dutch volunteered because they considered the Boers a brother people, the Germans did so too but also wanted to reduce British influence in the region. If you want me to quote a source for you then please let me know but one German politician in particular had the *amazing* idea of turning the German South African posessions + the Boer republics into a German-dominated empire. Imperialism is a dangerous drug.
@matheuroux5134

@@PrimusProductions The second Boer war started because the British demanded full voting rights and representation for the uitlanders (English population) residing in the Transvaal. Transvaal was a sovereign nation, acknowledged by the British in 1852 and again in the London Convention in 1884. From 1897 onwards, the High Commissioner for South Africa, Sir Alfred Milner, and the Colonial Secretary, Joseph Chamberlain, used the denial of rights to the uitlanders as their main point of attack against the Transvaal. The real reason for the war: The British wanted to expand their Empire (and take the gold and diamonds from Transvaal and Oranje Vrijstaat) Do you see similarities with the war in Ukraine? The war in Ukraine started because the Russians demanded more rights for Russians residing in the Crimea and Donbas. Ukraine is a sovereign nation, acknowledged by the Russians in 1994 in The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances. Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that,most Ukrainians wanted ties with Russia. He vowed to protect people from eight years of Ukrainian bullying and genocide. The real reason for the war: Putin wants to expand his Russian Empire.
