Goryokaku Park is a star-shaped park located in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan. It was originally built as a fortress in 1855 to protect Hokkaido from potential Russian invasion. The fortress, designed with a unique pentagonal shape, was completed in 1866 and served as the headquarters of the short-lived Republic of Ezo during the Boshin War in 1869.
Park Features
After the war, the fortress was converted into a public park in the 1910s. Today, Goryokaku Park is a popular tourist attraction and a national special historic site. Some of the key features of the park include:
• The star-shaped moats and embankments of the former fortress
• Over 1,000 cherry blossom trees planted along the moats, making it a famous hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot in spring
• Goryokaku Tower, a 107-meter tall observation tower offering panoramic views of the park and Hakodate city
• The Former Magistrate's Office, a reconstructed building showcasing traditional Japanese architecture where the shogunate officers once ruled
• Opportunities for activities like walking, boating on the moats, and picnicking under the cherry blossoms
Goryokaku Park is a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty, attracting visitors throughout the year with its well-preserved fortifications and scenic landscapes. It serves as a testament to Japan's rich cultural heritage and architectural ingenuity.
