Rinnoji Temple, located north of downtown Sendai, is a hidden gem that offers visitors a serene and beautiful Japanese garden experience. Founded in 1441 by Date Mochimune of the influential Date clan, the temple was originally built in Fukushima Prefecture before being relocated to Sendai in the early 1600s.
While the temple's street view may appear unassuming, its true beauty lies beyond the main hall. Visitors can enter the inner gardens through a paid, unmanned gate, where they are greeted by a stunning landscape featuring:
• Well-tended paths and plants
• Koi-filled ponds with friendly Japanese carp
• A picturesque three-storied pagoda
• An arched bridge
• A tea house
• A Buddhist cemetery
• Tombs of Date clan relatives
The garden is considered one of the finest in the region, offering numerous spots for quiet contemplation and relaxation. Visitors can enjoy strolling along the various paths, observing the local wildlife including turtles and tadpoles, and admiring the detailed wooden carvings and stone statuary throughout the grounds.
