Well for those of you that opted to wait until Late Muzzeloader Season here in Iowa you probably had a few different roller coasters of weather to battle. We start off the season with it being extremely warm. Battling factors of rain and wind to kick off the year. After that we had a few brief cold spells before a major cold front dumping 10" on the last week of the season.
I started off my year punching a doe tag during 2nd shotgun and purchasing an Any-Sex Tag for muzzeloader. We put in quite a bit of time in the field. The trail cams were showing inaccurate patterns on the mature bucks that we were after, but you can't kill them on the couch.
After spending a couple of evenings on a new property, Travis invited us down to Heritage 1865. On the first evening I had a chance at a decent buck but was not able to get him on camera. On the second evening I was in a treestand and started shivering as I was under dressed at 4. With not seeing a single deer until 515 when 3 mature bucks came walking towards me. Between not having a good rest, being rushed and shivering I unfortunately was not able to seal the deal.
That being said I couldn't end my season on a bad note. I took an afternoon off of work on the last day of the season. After having an incredible encounter watching two young bucks fight it out, I was able to harvest a mature doe before the end of legal shooting light.
It was a great year and I learned a lot! It's a great feeling to have meat in the freezer and I'm really looking forward to the 2024 season!
