Man you have some Beautiful locks there. Very nice. Love the keys just as much. What a great story to.

I'm not so clear on something. From a legal standpoint, if the lock itself is no longer in the possession of the railroad and it's a well-known matter of policy that they don't ever sell them or give them away, then theoretically couldn't it still be considered stolen property? Because you bought it from another party and have a receipt doesn't simply make it not-stolen property and even in some cases you can be on the hook for buying stolen property. I'm sure there are a lot of moving parts with jurisdiction and what laws apply where, etc, but fundamentally, at the very least, even if you're not on the hook for possessing stolen property, doesn't the railroad have the right to take back possession of said locks?

Just a fact about 8+/- years ago it was a co worker of mine at UPRR who was caught selling RR property on eBay he surprisingly was not terminated some of the locks he sold where older than the mainline locks you showed. He was the one who stated this it went all the way to the top, yes Ebay was contacted and UPRR demanded they change there listing practices over his listings. Yes both UPRR and BN are a joke for public safety it's all about the mighty dollar $$ and the heck with real public safety but management can have talk about rules for corporate insurance premium discounts but if we employees complain it's a joke they promote lairs and if you complain about safety and yard security it a joke and the heck with public safety, We have the FRA to help fight the corruption of the railroads but it's truly a lost cause pay the fine keep freight moving $$

A couple of times over the years I have found rings of keys with Railroad keys on them, such as the ones you have shown here. Knowing a number of them are still in use, realizing they are RR property I turned them over the the RR. Realizing some employee lost their set of keys. I realize this is not the situation here. I also was a collector of locks and keys, still am. Have been a commercial Locksmith over 40yrs. Not surprised you drew the attention of the authorities with the "Show n' Tell". As soon as I saw those keys a sort of RED Flag popped up. I believe your only "Saving-Grace" here may be you purchased from Ebay or similar. Compared to saying got them from a friend. I like the "Cotter Pin" key. I also realize your points of view and where you are coming from on this. Best of luck as you go along the paths of the unexpected Jareth.

Security Through Obscurity Isn't Really Security Although I can see the difficulty they have in securing switches and track side infrastructure. The locks have to with stand a very harsh environment with no maintenance. the keys must be widely distributed such that every locomotive crew has access, and nearly indestructible in the hands of people who do not work with small delicate things. I am not sure what other lock mechanism would even hold up to their environment, maybe Abloy? No matter what they will probably never be able to maintain long term key control. It is a bit upsetting to hear your story of intimidation by people of authority when they quite obviously knew that they did not have the legal standing to actually do anything. Glad to hear that you kept cool and seem chill about it.

great piece of info. thank you for this. I hate that you had to go thru what you did to achieve this knowledge. just last night I was listing a Brass key on ebay that had L & N R R stamped on one side and On other side had 1 letter followed by 5 numbers stamped on it. well I listed it and of course it was removed immediately and I couldn't figure out exactly why. L & N DOESN'T EVEN EXIST ANYMORE BUT I SURE COULDNT LIST IT. OH WELL, THANKS AGAIN FOR THE VIDEO

Employees of the railroads, get fired or steal them and sell them, they should be the ones getting in trouble, these keys should not be owned by the public, it’s a problem, but I understand you have a fascination with them. The railroads have federal jurisdiction.

If the keys are serialized then they should be able to be traced. If not, the entire system is flawed due to no audit-control.

1. eBay will hand over anyone's details to any "law enforcement" without a warrant. Ditto PayPal, Google, Apple, fuckin' Walmart...any corporation, really. It's on the same principle as when I worked at a Tim Hortons, and was instructed by the owners to give free stuff to cops "or else they won't come when we call them". 2. You were kind to talk to them at all. They clearly didn't have any legal authority to arrest you, or else they -- or rather, real cops -- would have. 3. It's a fun story.

Please share your sad story of forced interrogation with a good attorney..! You’re entitled to one very serious investigation into this kind of attempted bullying, and I’ll just bet one equally serious amount of compensation! Did they even bother to read you your Miranda Rights, like for instance your right to an attorney and your right not to answer ANY questions?
