In Pt 2 of our new series on David and Goliath, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray examines an element of the David and Goliath story most of us miss. Before there was David and Goliath, there was David and someone else. The literary design of the David and Goliath story reveals a tale of two shepherds. One was fearful. The other was faithful. But who was this other person?
That’s why it’s critical to pay attention to how characters are introduced in the Bible. A character’s introduction is indicative of what is to come in the story, and in 1 Samuel 9, we meet King Saul. He’s tall and impressive looking, but when we meet him, he’s lost his dad’s donkeys. If he can’t manage some donkeys, how’s he going to manage a nation? It’s really no surprise to find Saul trembling with fear because of Goliath.
On the other hand, David is ready to fight, and we find out why in 1 Samuel 17. As a shepherd, David used to strike down dangerous animals who threatened the flock. David had been faithful when no one was watching, and that was the source of his enormous faith. By the end of David and Goliath Pt 2, A Tale of 2 Shepherds you’ll recognize what made David’s heart so different from Saul’s, and you’ll have a deeper understanding of how to reflect God’s heart in your own life.
