Day 16 was gloriously sunny and the sky wonderfully blue. A chill breeze though kept temperatures comfortable. It was a perfect day for a walk.
We began the day with a circular walk from the small fishing village of Ars-en-Re taking a path on the edge of the shore and encircling old salt pans, marshes and brackish ponds. The tide was out uncovering mud flats full of food for passing flocks of birds.
Also out on the flats locals dug for shellfish. The shallow waters in the wide sheltered bays are perfect habitat for shellfish and several villages have well developed fisheries. The side of the island facing out to the Atlantic has miles of sandy beaches and a thriving tourist industry. The pretty, fortified capital, St Martin, adds to the attraction of the island.
At its northern tip lighthouses guide seafarers. We make our way to these before following the road to its end at the wide mouth of the bay we had walked beside earlier. Now as we stepped onto the sands once more the tide was racing in to fill those mud flats that had been so busy with birds feeding and locals digging earlier that day.
This is yet another beautiful part of the world.
