2:17 Largest Japanese garden in Europe - Parc Oriental de Maulévrier
Day 17 begins with a stop at the capital of the Ile De Re, St Martin. This is a jewel of a town surrounded by great walls and entered by powerful gates. Within these walls is a maze of streets which fill with flowers as the temperatures rise. Hollyhocks and roses add colour to streets of whitewashed houses possessed of shutters mainly of pastel blues and greens. The heavily protected harbour consists of several basins filled with pleasure craft. The quays have seen many of the old warehouses turned into hotels, cafes, restaurants and up market shops. Thirty years ago this place was "undiscovered" but often compared to the small ports of the French Riviera.
Driving north we pause at the garden (Parc Orientale) of Maulevrier. This claims to be the largest Japanese themed garden in Europe. Created in the first decade of the last century it was the work of Parisian architect Alexandre Marcel. He had married the daughter of the Chateau Colbert, which overlooks the Park, and was able to spend plenty of time overseeing the ongoing works. After years of neglect the garden began to be restored in 1987 and is today designated a "Jardin Remarquable by the French Ministry of Culture. This was a wonderful place to explore before arriving in our next stop, the Historic city of Angers.
