We explore the orphanage abandoned since 1984 where the orphans of miners and soldiers in Iglesias were hosted, educated and sent to work. It was run by the nuns and in Iglesias there have always been rumors of abuse, perhaps just rumors. Today its walls give space to adolescent outbursts and transgressive games which, precisely in such a place, take on a particular meaning.
The former orphanage of Iglesias, founded in 1923 and abandoned in 1984, appears today as a container-outlet for those infantile-adolescent impulses that we have encountered many times in the so-called "abandoned places". So called because, once their original function is exhausted, these places always become something else and, although abandoned, they are often very popular and used. Above all, as in this case, when they are not in the middle of nowhere but inside a city. The former "Childhood and Homeland" orphanage is located on the outskirts of Iglesias, a stone's throw from the hospital. Next to it there is a supermarket, in the ground a shared garden created by an association of local young people and, in addition to being frequented by dog owners (in the company of their dogs, of course) and asparagus hunters, a part of the building appears to house - or have hosted - homeless people as well.
But a separate chapter deserves that joyful, childish, senseless and often surreal provincial Satanism scattered on the decaying walls (in the proper sense of decay, decline, disintegration) testimony of the frequentation of the place by the young people of Iglesias. As already noted at other times, however, precisely in these areas of southern Sardinia (Gonnesa, Normann Village for example), on the walls of abandoned places young people give vent to their most hidden impulses and, now with one foot inside adulthood, they are children again.
So here are swastikas, pseudo-Satanic symbols, naked women, insults to dead children, confessions of having killed God (already found elsewhere, who knows if it is always the same murderer), a Padre Pio with phallic features, obscenities drawn in the best possible way, crosses overturned, in short, the whole repertoire of that nice and at the same time desperate need for expression of the young Sardinians we have talked about several times (see also our section of signs).
Yet, precisely in such a place, these marks left on the walls become something more than a simple diary of provincial boredom. They sound like the echo of past and ever present pain, at least within us.

In Iglesias there are various rumors about the former orphanage. Many are convinced that something dark has happened here that it is better not to remember, something horrifying, disturbing. There is talk of violence and abuse of children. However, things could be a little less horror. Obviously we can not know anything about individual personal episodes. To put it plainly: today we are unable to know if any slaps have flown or if any children have been abused. It is possible, it is probable ... We do not know. But - according to the research carried out so far - that of the "Childhood and Homeland" orphanage does not exactly seem like a horror story as it is told. On the contrary: testimonies in hand, there seem to be more positive memories than negative.
