Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! was release as a stand alone single shortly before ABBA's huge tour of North America and Europe. It reached Number 3 in the UK and Number 1 in Ireland. The first time it was included on an album was Greatest Hits Vol.2 which was also released to conincide with the tour, and the christmas market. Since its original release its been included on ABBA GOLD and later deluxe editions of their 1979 album Voulez-Vous. ABBA were never really disco but were influenced by it, primarily the sound of the Bee Gees. ABBA had their own sound which transcended genres.

Thanks for the ABBA. You know Agnetha had a birthday yesterday. Someone else mentioned the live Wembley video of this. It is great. But there's also a more intimate live video from "Dick Cavett Meets ABBA". Love the way Agnetha holds that note before the chorus.

This song is so amazing, deep and dense.. I do Love reactions to this very song: at, one exact point you can see when people get goose bumps and don't expect such density and intensity , when the violins draw you in whilst her voice pulls you out and high in the sky with that vibrato... There is AWE within the Sound of this song...and awe for us listening to it.. It's so Beautiful listening to it and seeing the natural reactions of humans to certain sounds and Harmonies.. AWE is the Word...

Awesome. So much more great songs too. 8 albums worth, with most of them good or great and no bad - some okay songs especially in early days. Hopefully the 9th album coming out this November will be of the same standard! We can dare to dream with one of the best musical groups ever, but they are in their 70s. It will be a gift regardless!

check out "eagle" "I'm a marionette" and "soldiers". I think they were one of the bands in the 70s and 80s, they had something unique, their melodies are unforgettable, the arrangements are good, and they were very consistent releasing one good record after the other.

Thx. can be, please, abba, the name of the game, the most complex, rich, in the many changes and its structure, it seems to me, with a timbre and strange/ surprising playing on the keyboard at the beginning and the chorus multi voice multi voice / counter melody abba®, at the end ,rich, creative too .

That is the amazing thing about Abba, I can´t really think of any song I dislike. I have favourites of course, but still I recognize my least favourite tracks as good songs. I love almost every album track, not just the singles. There are so many fun songs for you to discover. If you liked SOS I think you would like songs like "Knowing me, knowing you" or "So Long". I love fun tracks like "Kisses of fire", "Hole in your soul", "The Piper" and "If it wasn´t for the nights"...amongst many more...

Another great review. Love watching them. Been a fan of ABBA since 1975. Apart from the poppy. 'cheesy' tunes that folk refer to there are some fantastic tracks in their back catalogue, lesser known ones. Maybe check out 'Get On The Carousel' (Live) and The Piper. The Piper is in my top 5 favourite tracks.

Fun fact: The Swedish 80's goth rock band "Leather Nun" made an absolutely hilarious cover of this song where they lowered the pitch a little and made it sound absolutely badass yet funny at the same time. It's worth listening to for contrast. Sort of like the awesome yet bizarre and funny mash-up of Nine Inch Nails "Head Like A Hole" and "Call Me Maybe" someone made.

It's funny how today's reactors perception of what disco is is quite different from those of us who grew up in the era and recognize what is really a disco song. Gimme is not really a disco song. Abba never really captured the so-called disco sound of the era. Their allusions to it in the 78-79 era were quite different than the generic disco song you heard.
