Welcome to the rabbit hole that is ABBA. With more than 100 songs, their catalog is so rich and diverse that you're guaranteed to find songs you like. And their production and song writing is so good that you'll like songs in genres you're usually not keen on. I tried to organize their best work (IMO) into several genres. I added the year, song length and some comments for more info. My advice: pick the top songs from each category to find out which type of music you like best. Early music: - Waterloo (1974) 2:46 [a fun uptempo pop song, which was their international breakthrough] - Ring Ring (1973) 3:03 [similar to Waterloo] - My Mama Said (1974) 3:14 [very unusual song for them, a soul ballad] - Disillusion (1973) 3:04 [beautiful ballad written and sung by Agnetha] - Honey, Honey (1974) 2:56 [a fun midtempo pop song] - People Need Love (1973) 2:46 - Gonna Sing You My Love Song (1974) 3:35 70s pop ballads: - The Name of the Game (1977) 4:54 [one of their most sophisticated songs, lots of transitions] - Fernando (1975) 4:15 [a ballad with Spanish influences] - Knowing Me, Knowing You (1976) 4:02 [one of many breakup songs] - I Have a Dream (1979) 4:44 [lovely children's song with a choir at the end] - Arrival (1976) 3:00 [no lyrics on this song] 70s pop midtempo: - Chiquitita (1979) 5:26 [Also Spanish influenced, like Fernando. Downbeat verses with an upbeat chorus. One of their best] - Money, Money, Money (1976) 3:05 [a darker, more theatrical song. Great vocals by Frida] - Mamma Mia (1975) 3:32 [similar to SOS] - Angeleyes (1979) 4:20 70s pop uptempo: - Dancing Queen (1976) 3:50 [Their biggest hit. Brilliant harmonies] - Take a Chance on Me (1977) 4:05 [Another major hit. Very catchy, with nice backing by the guys] - I'm a Marionette (1977) 3:54 [Their most dramatic song. Large orchestral sound, with intense vocals] - Lovelight (Original Version) (1979) 3:46 - When I Kissed the Teacher (1976) 3:00 70s romantic ballads: - I've Been Waiting for You (1975) 3:39 [Lovely vocals by Agnetha, and great harmonies (as usual)] - My Love, My Life (1976) 3:52 [layered backing harmonies, creating a wall of sound] - One Man, One Woman (1977) 4:33 - I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do (1975) 3:15 70s rock: - Tiger (1976) 2:55 [very upbeat, with some nice transitions] - Watch Out (1974) 3:46 [A glamrock song, sung by Björn with a surprisingly gritty voice. Unusual and intense, but really fun] - So Long (1975) 3:06 [another glamrock song, sung by Agnetha & Frida] - Hey, Hey Helen (1975) 3:16 - Rock Me (1975) 3:03 80s pop: - The Winner Takes It All (1980) 4:55 [Agnetha's breakup song, and one of their biggest hits. Incredibly beautiful] - One of Us (1981) 3:55 [another breakup song] - Happy New Year (1980) 4:24 [very melancholic] - When All Is Said and Done (1981) 3:20 [Frida's breakup song] - Our Last Summer (1980) 4:18 [melancholic ballad by Frida] - Cassandra (1981) 4:50 [similar to Our Last Summer] - Slipping Through My Fingers (1981) 3:51 Synth pop: - The Day Before You Came (1982) 5:50 [A personal favorite. Very haunting ballad. Should've been a much bigger hit] - Eagle (Album Version) (1977) 5:51 [Another favorite. Has a psychedelic sound. Make sure to pick the full 6 minute version!] - Super Trouper (1980) 4:13 [really catchy pop song] - The Visitors (Album Version) (1981) 5:49 [Builds slowly to a climax. The vocoder gives Frida's voice a haunting sound] - Me and I (1980) 4:53 - Should I Laugh or Cry (1981) 4:32 - Head over Heels (1981) 3:45 - Elaine (1980) 3:44 - The Piper (1980) 3:25 - Under Attack (1982) 3:47 Disco: - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (1979) 4:49 [Disco pop at its best. Make sure to pick the full version, not the shorter music video] - Voulez-Vous (1979) 5:11 [impossible to sit still on this one] - Lay All Your Love on Me (1980) 4:33 [half disco - half synth pop. Nice vocoder effects] - Summer Night City (Full-length Version) (1978) 4:18 [pick the 'unreleased' version with the extra intro] - Does Your Mother Know (1979) 3:13 [with Björn on vocals] - On and On and On (1980) 4:16 - Lovers (Live a Little Longer) (1979) 3:28 Musical-type songs: - The Way Old Friends Do (live) (1980) 2:53 [Practically an anthem. Released as a live track on the Super Trouper album] - Thank You for the Music (1977) 3:48 [An ode to music, sung by Agnetha] - I Let the Music Speak (1981) 5:20 [Another ode to music, by Frida. Very complex song, with a lovely orchestral arrangement] - I Wonder (Departure) (1977) 4:33 [similar to I Let The Music Speak]

I can easily switch from classical to punk to funk to hardrock to... ABBA... ABBA was one of my first musical loves. They could score with (more or less) simple songs, but they could also come up with really incredibly moving and interesting songs. From the latter category, I would suggest the final song of their album 'ABBA - The Album' from 1977, called 'I'm A Marionette'. It's just an awesome song. Emotional and full of textual and musical tension.

Yeah, that album has so much good music! "Man in the Middle," has got some really good funky clavinet keyboard playing, and a great saxophone jammin' out at the end. "SOS" sounds so incredibly good to me, and yet so sad somehow, especially towards the middle, that it tears me apart, hearing it, and I feel like carrying on, when I hear the chorus again. Really amazing songwriting, with such a strong melodic and harmonic pull to it. Nice reactions, guys.

ABBA suffered years of derision from critics and the self professed prefects of cool. I got to know their music by breaking down their songs - just me and an acoustic guitar. There is nothing like the effort gone into creating these songs. It could be argued that it was a precursor to today's hothouse writing shops. Abba's songs are the result of a painstaking process of pop and rock craftsmanship. Don't take it from me, have a closer look yourselves. It highlights how critics were oblivious to the obvious and how their lack of musical curiosity revealed their own superficiality. The critic's unimaginative consensus that Abba's music was 'formulaic' has been well and truly shafted. How gloriously wrong can you be. So let's raise a glass to the critics and let them off.

When I listen to music by ELO, every song sounds exactly the same (although that has as much to do with the arrangement as the melody.) It's almost the same with the BeeGees. It's hard to get out of a rut. ABBA has some repetition in its style too, but they definitely had more variation than most other groups. If you want to hear a song with a different style, try "Andante, Andante" which has really grown on me. I think I know why ABBA experimented a lot. When they had their first hit, "Waterloo", the next thing they wrote was a song called "So Long" which I think is very good but it didn't rise as high in the charts, probably because it sounds so similar to Waterloo. I think ABBA realized they can't copy themselves too much. Since I like Waterloo so much, I also like So Long a lot too. ABBA released 100 English songs. Fifty were duds, the other fifty were pretty good, or great. But in the art or music business, 50% is a great ratio.

I can't believe you're hearing this classic track for the first time. But, better late than never! If you (like me) prefer more acoustic, downbeat tracks, rather than joyous/dance tracks then you should also check out ABBA's 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', 'The Name of the Game' and 'Eagle' (full length version). All three might be right up your street! I like how you react to the audio tracks themselves, rather than the videos, some of which can be quite underwhelming or cringeworthy.

While the band has gotten a bad rap for being "cheerful," it's really rather difficult to find much that is cheerful or "up" beat. Take a flip side, a lesser known song like Elaine. It has a frenetic "upbeat" sound on first listen. But once you listen to the words, "You come, you stay, you go, it really doesn't matter. You've done it all before, by now they know the pattern...You're like a goldfish in a bowl," what at first sounded "upbeat" is instead ironic and urgent, not cute and bouncy. Look for the dichotomy in all their best music - there is a melancholy and that's what die hard fans were attracted to.

Try ABBA "The Visitor" it is quite unlike their other music. It's the story of some one slowly going insane.

Pete Townshend of The Who has said SOS by ABBA is perhaps the best pop song ever written, only his opinion but there you go.

WATERLOO was the tune that got me hooked. NAME OF THE GAME is also catchy. In fact, any song by ABBA is better than (place your favorite group here) Dig?

Have you heard of the band "Ghost"? They did a great cover of an ABBA song called "I'm A Marionette". It'd be fun to see you react to both versions!

ABBA means Father Creator God ,then SOS means Save Our Souls ! Darling means beloved as in his Beloved Children . Relisten with this in mind , makes sense then . Not bad vocals either for non English band from Eurovision hey with heavy accents at the time hardly spoke English !

I noticed that you have not reacted to any of their NEW songs... that's right, after 40 years they released a new album of 10 songs - Voyage. They have not lost any of their abilities, vocals or talent, shame it looks like this WILL be the last new music! Try comparing one of their new songs to their older songs. My favourite of the new songs is Don't Shut me Down but I also like Just a Notion which was originally written and performed back in the 70's but not released, now its been finished and released. I believe the vocals are the original recording from the 70's.
