Hi Everyone,
The doctors got back to me today about my pulmonary capacity test. First the pulmonologist sent their notes. The gist of them is that, because my lung scans are identical to the scans from last May, they do not believe that my collapsed lung is the cause of my chronic cough.
They indicated that the issue could be that I was on an ACE inhibitor, Labetalol, which I have already stopped using in favor of Losartan. Since my cough has reduced over the past couple months, I’ll say that is probably accurate.
The pulmonologist suspects the cause of the issue could be GERD, which is a fancy acronym that amounts to saying I have acid reflux. They recommend Omeprazole, which I am already taking, but they may not be aware of because it is an over the counter drug. Most people know it by the name Prilosec.
The pulmonologist also recommended we consider looking at allergies and as always, recommended a lifestyle change. They also mentioned rising the head of my bed.
I am, of course, already implementing the lifestyle changes. That’s what this whole journey is about. I have a lot of weight to lose still, but I am moving in the right direction. Honestly, since I started regular exercise, the cough has been much more under control.
These changes were echoed later in a message from my internist, who summed up the Pulmonologists report and told me I should discuss my options with my PCP.
So the upshot of my pulmonary capacity test is that yes, I’ve got some issues, but no they are not responsible for my cough and there’s no plan to do any further work on my lungs. In short, change is up to me. I am going to do my best to implement that change.
That’s it for the lung news. Now it’s time to put my work into my walking routine and nutritional plan. I am hoping I can turn things around that way.
Speaking of that effort, here are today’s numbers. I weighed in this morning at 303.2, roughly the same as yesterday. I’d like that to be coming down, but I’ll take staying even for the moment.
My fasting blood glucose was a very respectable 81 this morning,. This is my lowest blood sugar count so far this year, beating my previous low of 82 on January 29th.
My active calories yesterday was a very respectable 1075, while my steps taken were 12,030. Those are solid numbers. No complaint there. My calories consumed were 2,277. That’s a little higher than I would have liked, but still a pretty good number.
Overall, I’m feeling pretty good and happy to be getting back into a routine. The cough I originally went to the pulmonologist for has mostly decreased. II think the medication change and the increased exercise is helping considerably. It appears my next CAT scan and MRI will be in May, so that gives me a couple more months to lose weight and improve my health before my next major assessment. I’m really hoping we’ll be able to see improvement in my organ health by then, especially the fatty liver. Until then, I’ll just keep working.
Today’s Sir Terry Pratchett Quote of the day is from Night Watch.
“You'd like Freedom, Truth, and Justice, wouldn't you, Comrade Sergeant?' said Reg encouragingly.
'I'd like a hard-boiled egg,' said Vimes, shaking the match out.
There was some nervous laughter, but Reg looked offended.
'In the circumstances, Sergeant, I think we should set our sights a little higher--'
'Well, yes, we could,' said Vimes, coming down the steps. He glanced at the sheets of papers in front of Reg. The man cared. He really did. And he was serious. He really was. 'But...well, Reg, tomorrow the sun will come up again, and I'm pretty sure that whatever happens we won't have found Freedom, and there won't be a whole lot of Justice, and I'm damn sure we won't have found Truth. But it's just possible that I might get a hard-boiled egg.”
