Thank you so much for your great generosity in making this freely available to all. I was struggling through my book alone and got so stuck at this point because I couldn’t work out the value once that extra little line for semiquavers was added. Oh how I wish I’d found your videos then - 2 seconds watching this and it was all sorted! I’m just wondering now how come I’ve struggled so much with such a straightforward concept! Bless you for this ❤

Great video. Please do consider placing the notebook/ book correctly under the camera frame, as the last line was not visible while solving Problem 'b'.. Thanks

You are quite right. This is one of my earliest videos... I was so nervous, and found it so difficult to concentrate on the topic in hand whilst considering aspects of camera etc. I've improved my technique with confidence and practice. Apologies for the silly mistakes as I was learning the craft of recording!

Thanks ever so much for this, Sharon. It's amazing what you forget about music theory when you haven't studied it for decades. I'd completely forgotten about the rules for beaming and grouping notes together in units of one crotchet. I love your videos and they're helping me massively during lockdown. If I may make a tiny bit of constructive criticism, and you probably already know this, but from 7:52, the bottom of the page is not in frame, so I couldn't see the workings out of Exercise 3b, and again at 13:41 on Exercise 3e (until 14:40 when you realise and move the book up into frame!) Luckily I could then see the answer for both 3a and 3e. I know it's hard to work out while filming what the range of the overhead camera is.

Yes, I do apologise. This is one of the first sets of videos I ever did a few years ago. It took me a while to get over my nerves and also to get my set-up right. I will be re-visiting the ABRSM syllabus when the new workbooks are out this Autumn (or as soon after as I can manage) - I shouldn't make such rookie mistakes then... Even so, I'm glad you found my videos helpful :D

Hi there Sharon, I have a question about IF I can joined together the MIXTURE of QUAVERS & SEMIQUAVERS to make the VALUE of one MINIM beat ? Is it ONLY that the MIXTURE can be joined to one CROTCHET beat ? Thank you.

Hello ma'am, can we beam a group of 2 quavers & 2 semi-quavers together??
@SharonBill
2 жыл бұрын
It depends upon the time signature. Ordinarily not as this exceeds the value of a crotchet beat. It would have to be one quaver and two semiquavers, or two quavers to make a crotchet beat. However, you must always show where each new beat begins. Maybe watch this section again. It is a bit tricky, but it's such an important foundation and much will be built on this over the following grades. It will make sense if you keep working on it. Best wishes for your studies.
