Hi Sharon, thanks so much for the content you've made, it's so helpful. I had a question about exercise 2f - I was under the impression that beamed notes should add up to a crotchet, with the exception of four quavers beamed together to make a minim. In this exercise, the two beamed semiquavers will only add up to a quaver - have I misunderstood something along the way? Thanks again for all the great content and resources.

You are correct, but if you are referring to Exercise 2(f) then the two semiquavers are the final part of beat two - the first part of beat two being the dot. You beam in order to show each beat. These semiquavers are 'finishing off' beat two.

this is still confusing me (NOTE VALUES) i just keep getting mixed up. and do you lose marks if you use american instead of the proper names. i am now your number 1 pest, sorry to be a pain.

Hi :D Not a pest at all! No, you won't lose marks. Either term (American/Classical) is fine. Yes, it is confusing. Just take it steady and follow the maths through a step at a time. I find it easiest to sketch out a circle and divide it into quarters so I can visualise the time values. It will make sense and get easier and you keep on :D

I AM FROM ENGLAND NOT AMERICA (not to be rude) but i would really apprechiate it if you could do an english version thx

I include both English and American terms for each video as I really can't record each video twice. It's not just English vs American now, it's also more to do with what instrument you play. My son went to an English Conservatoire and they used the 'American' terms all the time. So, it's as well to get used to both. It took me a while to use both, but you'll soon find it's not so tricky :)

Hello sis, thank you for this great expository to the theory of music. Pls i need you to help me capture some of the explanations you are doing at the top of the sheet. Francis from Nigeria

If I've understood what you're referring to, I'm just diagramming out the way a note is extended by half as much again and then the following note must therefore be shorter.Eg 1/2, 1/2 dotted becomes 3/4, 1/4. Just another way of thinking about it!

I haven't done this on the piano as I don't want to confuse the issue of the rhythm with aspects of pitch. Thank you for your kind words 😊

This has really helped me because I got confused with the adding of the notes, I guess the fractions got me muddled up hah. But all in all, this guide has been very beneficial thanks and keep doing what you do :)
