No violence, no alcohol, no cocaine, no attitude, no fashion snobs, thousands of instant best friends, mass joy, black and white dancing together, smiling at each other... you can't bring that back. Its gone. It was unique. 1989-1993: The Last Great Party of Humanity before our monitored, regimented, vacuous, modern world nailed the lid down forever.

I went to my first rave in 89, and it became our lives for many years. Lots of people in comment’s mentioning no phones etc, but I think another important difference from those days to what I see on social media now, is most of the time you didn’t even know where the DJs were, they were tucked away behind speakers or elevated in the darkness on towers, whereas now the Dj ( normally a hot girl, virtually naked ) is at crowd level being filmed by the crowd as they dance around, strike poses and pretend to mix. In the good old days everyone went for the music and the feeling, it was the last great culture in the Uk, and there’s never been anything like it since.

So true! one of the most revolutionary things about raves was getting away from the audience watching a performer. I cringe every time I see a crowd, phones out, filming the dj. Poor, misguided fools.

yes. It was fun back in 1989-1991 and i remember it well...kind of. Everyone was cool (except the ones trying to be cool). The e's were doves (15 quid) and the trips (5 quid) were either batman or superman's. No-one really did coke but if you went to someones house they would usually try and impress you by pulling out a baggie (sounds familiar?) As for the raves, You could walk around and just sort of join in with anyone. They would laugh at how out if you were and you would laugh right back and tell them they were completely out of it. Everyone would laugh and hug each other then a top tune would come on and dancing would be the main thing. We used to go out every single night of the week and i will list some of the places for the people that were there. Camden palace, The dungeons, Rage, Trip at Astoria, Rat pack, etc. you know them i am sure. For at least 2-3 years it was something else. Great music, great friends, great times. Im now 48, married with kids and my brain is still half working so glad to have something to look back and say i was there. Good luck todays kids if you can re-create another party atmosphere like that one. I hope you can :)

+Ashton Yarlett if only it could happen again - just turned 18 and wishing it was 1989. i think there's just too many scene kids, hipsters and cunts around to create atmosphere this amazing - that and the police would be all over it. unless there's another drug like ecstasy or weed is legalized i just don't see it happening.

Being fortunate enough to have attended quite a few warehouse raves at the time and looking back, what I don't think will ever be the same again is how many people of so many different cultures and outlooks on life just rocked up and danced the night out .. no attitude, no fights & little grief.. just lots and lots of like minded people getting it together to jam their arses off to some mental mental tunes. Thanks for the memories mr OP. Happy, happy days. Peace.

Clothing was totally unimportant, that's part of what made the raves so great, I was a skinhead all the way through the 80's. Gang fighting etc, all good fun, but the raves liberated so many people from little boxes, rich poor, black white. Nothing mattered apart from partying as long as you could. When fashion and night clubs got involved it was the end of the road for me, but 89 England, 90 Ibiza, fantastic times x

A little info from Frankie Bones on this rave: "Sept 23, 1989 Ipswich UK Hangar. ENERGY. What happened was the police tried to stop the people from getting there which caused a seven hour delay in reaching the space. It didn't even start until after 7 A.M. So once the Police realized 17,000 people were trapped in every little town in a 20 mile radius they lifted the ban and thats why people are going mad. The people had won. I remember hundreds of cars diverting across the long field which was about 6:45 a.m. this opened up the entire area which was country roads stuck in raver traffic for 4-5 hours. The police tried to keep the event by happening but actually let the event happen due to security risks that the Old Bill actually caused. What is even more strange about September 23, 1989 is that I wasn't originally booked for the event. Little "Louie" Vega was on the flyer. Louie & his manager were on the same flight going over to London the first time when I played on August 26, 1989. Patrick Moxie (his manager) did not want Louie playing at illegal rave parties and actually told me, I shouldn't get involved with these type of events,. My explanation was "Patrick, I spent 1/2 my teenage life in Subway Tunnels doing illegal sh*t, this is a chance of a lifetime. We invited them to the Energy, I played and Patrick tells me, they had lined up a half a million dollars in Remixes for Louie and that they could not be bothered with "distractions" right now. Two weeks later back in New York City, I get a call that Louie had to cancel his September 23, 1989 gig and they wanted me to take his slot because it was a no-brainer, we murdered it on 8-26-89. But I had to go to the U.K. by myself for 17 days. There was no communication like internet or cell phones, so that trip was pretty hard for me. So many good things happened that trip but I was so home sick after that weekend. I also know I played the second slot, I believe Jazzy M opened from 7:15-8:15. I know I played 8:15-9:15 and there was a shortage of DJ's who actually made it. I believe Fabio went on and then Evil Eddie Richards, though.....this I can't confirm, I was having too much fun...."

I love this footage its so important in the global story of rave to realize UK was the pioneer of the culture and also produced a lot of music. Yes music started else where and other places were important globally but the scene we made it happen IMO. Globally at the time nothing could touch the often illegal pay parties of 1989 in the UK or the free parties of 1990 - 1992 we were literally light years ahead. Such an amazing time to be young but old enough to be part of it. Castle Morten Massive!

Daniel Thorp Yep this is an overdub. Its what the Sunrise / Worldwide Enterprises put on the original VHS release back in 1989. A few people from the event have said the tracks in the soundtrack were played on the night but alas I did not go so cannot vouch for this. The reason the clips are only 10 minutes long is when I uploaded these to youtube back in 2007 there was a 10 minute cap on video length by YT. All the film is there, as you can see this is part 02 of 06.

Not one person cared about how you looked when you danced. You bumped into someone accidentally and it was, omg, sorry. Where you from? No attitudes, we just wanted to dance the night away. Didn't cause any trouble. Best feeling in the world. And I'm proud to say I was there!

I love the authenticity of this video! I can imagine the camera man would have had a big old clunky thing on his shoulder! Far out these were the good old days..just awesome

How lucky were we to be around at this point in time? If you think of the billions of years that have been and gone yet we were lucky enough to be there..the small moment in time..blessed ❤
