I would have loved to have been around for this but I was born too late - 9 years old in 1989. I loved the music though; listened to it on the way to and from school and got all the jokes about being a 'druggie raver' pilled out of my mind on disco biscuits. In the early 90s I remember driving down the M5 in my Mum's Volvo and seeing all the old vans and buses full of new age travellers off to another free party, and we lived not far from Castlemorton Common, site of the biggest of all the raves (and sadly, the one that triggered the moral panic and the bill that finally ended the whole scene) in 1993. Oh, how I'd have loved to have been out there in a field dancing too. At least I was there for the trance / Ibiza house era between 1997-2001, which was ace but very corporate and club based. It was more about the name behind the decks than the music being played on them. And at the tail end of mid-90s 'lad' culture, too many people just wanted to get bladdered and start a fight. It was all so bound up with alcohol. The music was probably more polished but I suspect the scene was nothing like thousands of people in a field or warehouse, with no posing, no attitude, just dancing and losing themselves in the music. I do despair of and for today's kids. Living as they are under another horrible oppressive Tory govt that has taken all their hope, they should either be out on the streets trying to change it, or escaping it in some farmers field, but all they seem bothered about is clothes, the gym and mobile phones.

I get your point Don and I was at this event btw but in the eyes of the police it was not a legal licensed event. You are right about the landowners permission, there is a good video clip of the farmer talking about a deal he made with Tony Coulston Hayter in lending his land for a Sunrise event and how the local community had shunned him ever since and he couldn't drink in his local anymore. Don't think he was too bothered as he got a chunk load of cash for it.

@ 7:08...BOUNCERS!!! I totally forgot about those days. Late 80's and even very early 90-91 raves in LA were something special. Although I still think that today there are some very good shows/scenes with certain DJ's (Sasha, Guy J, Nick Warren, etc), I will have to agree with alot of posts here: This era of the dawn of house and eventually techno and trance was once in a lifetime and will never be experienced again. I am glad I was able to experience it...part of the fun was getting wind of a rave, going to an address in Hollywood in order to get another location to go to out on the East side, then get yet another address to some wharehouse in downtown, then to finally get there and dance until dawn. The people and the vibe was so visceral yet it felt like one big family...everyone was so interesting and there for all the right reasons. yes there were plenty of drugs, but different than today...they were more of the facilitating medium rather than the focus like today's shows. I know that the scene in LA was nothing compared to England or even Europe back in those days, but for me here state side, it was something I will never forget

Very lucky if you were old enough to attend any Raves 87-89, scene and music changed drammatically in 1990, untill its demise in 93. Remaining strictly orthodox 87-93, any later you missed it. It all went as quickly as it came.

I agree. By definition the modern scene is corporate, i.e. controlled from the top down whereas much of the music of that era (I was at school when acid house broke through and am old enough to comment) was by younger people for younger people. That's not to say it won't happen again, just that it isn't really happening now..

Well, like in your day when the best raves were spread through word of mouth and the general pubic would have no clue about it, the same goes for today. You don't leave a rave boasting about the fact you went raving, you let the memory sit happily within you for the rest of your days, and reminisce about the good times like many of the people on this video are. Lovebox, SW4 aren't raves, if you want a real taste of what today has to offer, look a bit harder, raving is as good as it's ever been.
