Born Bernard Stanley Bilk, he changed his name to Acker - Somerset slang for "mate" - after learning to play the clarinet in the Army. He wrote the song under the original title "Jenny," his daughter's name. But It was changed to "Stranger on the Shore" to match the title of the TV series it became the theme to.

Yeah it's a Clarinette. Acker Bilk made it his own icon. His other trade marks were a bowler hat and a striped waistcoat. He formed the paramount jazz band and they produced music for decades. Mostly they did covers but they also wrote a few original hits. Some of them have lyrics attached. Buona Sera was a hit for him, and That's my home. Most of them were before the Beatles turned the music industry on its head, He last had a hit called Aria in 1976, a beautiful instrumental that got to 5. His version of a Taste of Honey is particularly beautiful too. In the first couple of years of the 60s you would hear this refrain playing everywhere.Shame it's faded from public consiousness now.
