Written in 2009, Thomas Adès' 'Lieux Retrouvés' for cello and piano opens up with 'Les Eaux' (The Waters), a spectacular piece that seems to depict water in all its various forms, both physical and metaphysical - from the cool stillness of a mountainous stream to the tumultuous rapids further downstream... In my opinion, this movement is without a doubt both one of the hardest pieces I've ever has to learn, and one of the 21st century's masterworks for cello.
