I guess I'd glue the fin side and put it on the blank paper, let it dry a bit, and then trace cut with the razor knife.

Thank you for the helpful video(s)! I built many an Estes rocket as a kid, and have now gotten back into it w/ my kids. Back then I used some sort of sealing dope that was probably toxic....so I will try this technique (as well as the Elmers wood filler technique you show in a different video) instead! I'm finally dabbling in mid-power rocketry, so will value the cleaner look and extra strength.

I make templates of the fins then make some out of kydex plastic they never break but your idea is cool and less money to make so great idea

I have done this to the fins of model rockets I built before coating them with model airplane dope. I even overlapped the line where the fin joined the body tube to help keep them from being broken during landing.

Great tip !! I am scratch building a modest Honest John for A thru C sized engines. After sanding the diamond taper on the fins they were very flimsy at the ends. This technique beefed them up very nicely, I am not worried about them breaking too easily now. Plus the diamond taper really shows up nicely thru the paper, can't wait to attach them and get some paint on them.

Could you use a uhu glue stick for applying paper skins?
@DaWalkDude

It needs to be wood or white liquid glue, as needs to be wicked by the paper and wood

Great video! How would you add the skinning to a fin that just has rounded edges, would you wrap the paper around?
@apogeerockets
4 жыл бұрын
Well... it depends on the curvature of the fin. Paper doesn't stretch. But you can experiment by adding some water to detach the fibers so it will conform around compound curves. You'll have to play around. That is what makes rocketry so fun.

@@apogeerockets Wow, thanks for the tip! Honestly I'm surprised you would reply at all, considering the age of the video. Great support guys! The curve I was talking about is the technique where you sand a 45 degree bevel on each edge except the root edge, and then sand, by hand with a finer grit sandpaper to get a nice smooth curve, because your hand has some give. I'm sure you know this already though!

So do you seal the fin before you do this or no? Can you still fillet the fins with this technique?
@apogeerockets
4 жыл бұрын
No. You don't need to seal the fin before. The paper will do that. Yes. You can still fillet the fin. That is encouraged.
@brichter543
4 жыл бұрын
@@apogeerockets You can fillet right over the paper? Or do you need to leave 1/8" or so of exposed wood at the base of the fin so the fillet will contact wood directly?

Hello! I bought a balsa wood doll furniture kit for the grand babes. Now that I have it all glued together, I believe it will still be too fragile even with the glue. Is there something I can dip it in or spray the pieces with to harden them? Something that would almost be like a plastic coat? Thank you for any help you can suggest. Take good care :0)~

You can use fix it epoxy that Apogee sells and use it on the glue joints.
