Usually you do the save state with json serialization and you would have a class instead of a string. Turning into an encoded string will be unnecessarily limiting later on Usually I already have a giant class called playerstate that is mass serialized so I just keep adding onto that

i also use classes to save states like this!

I think with the small amount of saving I'm doing between rooms it should be fine, I've used Json serialisation for Java and Python projects, but never within a Gamemaker project, and none of the room data needs to be permanently saved, so I guess it didn't cross my mind 🤔

10k wishlists won't hurt, but you shouldn't believe it is required for any game to become a success. It might help in a more smooth launch eventually, but the conversion rate is anyone's guess. It depends on many other factors, like pricepoint, whether the game is any good, whether the wishlists are not just 'supportive other devs' and real gamers interested in your games and so on. There's also some nonsense being spread about visibility on Steam pages. In reality there's much more to user engagement with a 'new' game on Steam and how the algorithm will boost a game. There is no magic formula. But the more polished a game is (and its page and its demo and its screenshots and text descriptions), the higher the chance it will be worth whatever reasonable price is being asked for it to most people. The higher the chance of positive reviews and ultimately that will all help. And then we are ignoring any direct competition that does things better/worse than your game. Or timing of a launch. It's fairly impossible to predict a game's real success. Especially short-term. An objectively better game can still underperform. And in general indie devs tend to ask too much money for their games. Having said that, your game at least looks the part and seems fun to play.

From the research I've done, you're spot on with everything, and that it's a number of factors, even a bit of luck with launch timings, and who is wishlisting. The price point of my game will be between 10-15 €/$, which I think compared with other games in the genre, should be fair. One of the things that I think hurt AKxolotl was the near 20$ price tag, when it lacked content compared to Gungeon and Isaac. I do not want to make the same mistake, and realistically, because I have no deadlines, the game won't release until I think it's ready and worth the money

I'm enjoying these videos and am going to go back to see what I've missed. I'm curious about the tools and methodology used for everything (and, of course, all the whys). The dev environment. As an aside, I'm also curious about good ways to save game states (which may be several systems). All the best!

Yo usually you'd want to use some sort of associative array. LIkely a dictionary with the room ID as the key, and several sub-objects (arrays, sets, dicts, objects, strings, ints, etc) which you can serialize. Ez :)

To speed up creating tilesets you might be able to use the TilePipe2 tool, it requires some base features of the tiles like corner, strait or background and creates all of the rest of the tiles.
