And so ends the fourth season of Ancient DOS Games with a failed attempt at a blue-screen and amateur 3D animation! ;D
To finish things off for Season 4, Gemini's taking a look at Star Control II, a space exploration game developed by "Toys for Bob" and published through Accolade in 1992. While the game is fundamentally a clone of a much earlier space sim known as Starflight, there's enough personality here that the game's able to stand apart on its own merits, despite being hit or miss with most of its mechanics, though never doing anything so badly that it's not fun.

Additional Information and Corrections:
Here's a link to buy the original DOS verisons of Star Control and Star Control II from GOG: www.gog.com/ga...
If you prefer the freeware port of the game (which you should under most circumstances) you can acquire it from here: sc2.sourceforge...
One thing I didn't mention is that the game comes with a supplemental guide which lists all kinds of information you would normally get through the course of regular gameplay. This guide is mostly meant to be a quick-reference in case you don't want to write things down and can't remember certain things, but can also be used to assist you in figuring out what to do to progress the story or solve certain conundrums.
Turns out its possible to zoom in and out on the starmap, making it possible to auto-pilot to different systems which are close together. However, it's the ONLY aspect of the game which requires pressing keys other than arrows, spacebar or enter; Zooming in and out is done with Insert and Delete. :o
Another thing I forgot to mention is that you can actually give complete control of combat to the AI for your own ships. This can help out greatly if you're having trouble with the combat and I've known the game can do this since forever... I just continually forget about it whenever I talk about the game for whatever reason. :P
