Hey! Don't read this comment unless you wanna get spoiled on the game! I feel very bad about time deciding this match, as it was a spectacular one. Like you said several times during the match, time is a resource. Neither player seemed to be keeping up with the clock - 2 minute increment is not a lot of time for mid- or late-game AW on a map as large and complex as this one and the play would definitely have been to build up time early and keep from going into the tank on build and moves. A poor plan executed quickly in this format is better than a perfect plan executed slowly.

That looked like such a tough map to play on a 10-minute timer. Normally you start in a corner - or two adjacent corners - and can split the map into two "halves" with a "boundary" where conflicts happen. But here, each player had two corners plus a central bubble, with boundaries all around. It takes so much more time than a regular map, and both players struggled. Their play was amazing while we saw it, though. Mangs - please invite both to play the same settings with no timer, if they'll accept, for a replay and bragging rights! A live match tournament finale is rough in multiple ways. Both players may be 'physically' present to play, but they may not be in their best condition or distraction-free environments, whether or not they are generally good at live games. Long matches help smooth that out. That said, I imagine all parties agreed to this date/time and understood the rules, so it's a fair result. Both played phenomenally well in this game. You criticized their early time commitments, but Diaphanous' playing an early capture game with one less tank put Deadfs on the back foot with a slight income disadvantage which cascaded into a late battle copter, late anti-air and some base skips to afford crucial units. The result of all that was Diaphanous' mid-game positioning, which you highlighted as a strength. ;)

It almost seems like the timed format is unintentionally encouraging players to build fewer, stronger units instead of lots of smaller units, just too many units on the field make it impossible to actually move everything, let alone move them optimally. If AWBW could add some kind of timer delay after each move, it would probably make the format more viable. Even just giving five seconds after a move before the clock ticks down would at least make it physically possible to move all of your troops on your turn.

Ideally, increment timer may work better if it gets longer with every round, or maybe unit count (although that may not be fair), or based on moving a unit instead of ending the turn (you get bonus time, 10 or 20 seconds, every time you move a unit, so there is at least something happening regularly, and being forced to move something may give a different perspective after that move). But there will be technical limitations.

The competitive Advance Wars scene could really learn from professional Chess for things like this, where there's even specific terms and concepts related to how time management affects gameplay decisions, like "Kotov Syndrome" and "analysis paralysis". When you're playing a live match, it's as much of a part of the rule set and gameplay interactions for that round as turn limits. Moreover it's a skill that needs to be practiced. Makes me think about how the real-time based time limit introduced in certain missions in Dual Strike was so lenient that it could be freely ignored, it makes me wonder how good time as a mechanic could've been in some missions if it was implemented differently and more strictly. Congrats to deadfs for the win, though they really were both close to timing out anyway.

to be fair they really weren't managing their time efficiently early where it's easiest and most important, and decided on spammy big unit count over teching up when they could've. it seems to me like they both played a more standard-effective style of play in a format which can punish you for that really hard, on a map that's also pretty hard in live format. still a great match though, would love to see a rematch where they're both more comfortable

This is the tricky part about live. It's a completely different play style and not something everyone knows how to do. I asked both of them prior to the match if they wanted to play the match this way, and they both accepted, though Diaphanous did say he wasn't going to be very good at it.

What a match! I think that was fair enough. Although they both played very well, and had lots of back and forth, deadfs had a 4 properties lead, one away from winning. Maybe Diaphanous would win if the match was longer, but time management was part of the game here. It could be nice someone communicating with the players during the match, just to be sure everything is going fine, and to warn them when time gets critical, but I don't know how much control the host of the match has, and it could be abused. That would be a much worse way to end the match, but just throwing ideas in case something sticks. Internet games are always tricky to manage. Still, I believe both can be proud of this game, it was a blast!

Great tournament overall, but I disagree with the format. To draw parallels to chess: It was basically like having the knockout phase be determined by classical time control (an abundance of time) and the finals be decided by blitz (quite limited time). Some players are a lot better at classical than blitz and vice versa. I expect the same to be true for Advance Wars. For next time, I think the time format should be consistent the entire tournament, so we can get a true winner of said format; and not have it muddled in the finals. To me Diaphanous seemed the best "classical" player, (and the rightful winner) but that is still yet to be determined. But as I said, still very much enjoyable. Looking forward to next season! :)

I'm not sure how easy it would be to implement such a feature in AWBW, but tournament live games could work similarly to classical time control games in chess. Under FIDE rules, each player is given 90 minutes with 30 second increments per move. However, after move 40, both players get an additional 30 minutes. I imagine a similar system can be created by tournament organizers where after a certain day is finished (I'm not sure what day is considered a "long game" in Advance Wars), both players get more time. As an aside, it's interesting how the increment for blitz Advance Wars is two minutes, yet playing on increment still has the feeling of needing to move without thinking to avoid getting flagged.

It's incredibly hard to take new properties or do anything major on increment unless you have a large advantage, and deadfs could easily repel the incoming attacks. There are two timers (as can be seen above the "day" indicator): "Turn timer" and "Total timer". Turn time is the one that you have for making a turn, while Total is the one you have for the entire match. You can time-out from the Turn timer on a first ocassion and ONLY IF you moved (capt, fire, etc.) a single unit then you auto-end the turn, while a second time-out from the Turn timer is gg. However, timing-out from the Total timer is an instant gg. Just a few more notes: The Total timer is also the timer that appears on the CO window. Also, the match had 10+2 minutes as Total timer, while having a 10 minutes for the Turn timer. This means that Total timer was 10 minutes total initial time + 2 minutes per turn. Finally, when the Total timer goes lower than the Turn timer (fewer than 10 minutes in this match), then any moment you time-out (including the "punish time") is gg. About the "punish time" (the red timer that appears when you reach 0 in the Total timer), that's the script boot, that runs every 1 minute in the site. Basically, when the Total timer reaches 0, you have randomly (depending on the timing of the boot script) from 0 to 59 seconds to time-out entirely.
@j-rey-
Жыл бұрын
@profeta4129 Oh, so in this match, each player had at most 10 minutes to use in a turn, and a total of 10 + 2 * turn_number minutes to use in the whole match. And if their total timer got lower than 10 minutes and they got a turn timeout, it is gg?

I can see why the tension building aspect of live play would be appealing for a tournament finale, but an hour of tension building with little action just for the likely loser to win via DQ is... not satisfying. I don't agree. The goal should be start as casual as possible and end as professional as possible. As Mangs warned the whole match, time management was a key component in this match, and they both neglected it. It's fair game in my book. If it was in the early matches, I'd guess it would scare away many players. If willing for feedback, it could be nice someone to give a clear feedback when their time is very close to zero. The web application doesn't do enough job to warn the players, and it could happen some delays until their moves are registered. Having someone just to say, "hey, you have 20 seconds" seems simple, but could have changed everything here. Sounds like a better and fair solution for me.

10 minutes not enough, obvious at this point.

30 day limit will never come onto effect with a 10 minute timer. I thibk the timer is fine when the entire tourney has a timer but having it for the finale was clearly a bog mistake. Biggest mistake of the match!

@@turbo8628 Yes, I mean, the game ended on day 11, its been almost an opener match with a little bit of engagement, anticlimatic.

Sorry Mangs, but this was a shit anticlimactic end to an otherwise great tournament. The original Advance Wars wasn't meant to be time constricted by design like this.

I understand why the time rules are like this but it honestly feels like they're too strict lol. Like it really wouldn't be that bad if players got another 30 seconds per turn or something lol.

Yep it should have been 3 minute increments.

Cool match but the ruleset really ruined it. I'm ok with live games as in "not enough time to use the move planner/damage calculator every turn". But a lot less so when it is "not even time to play the game properly, a time out will happen for sure at some point anyway".
