747s were mostly out of Shannon Airport. I went on the Jumbo to NY , and you could walk about on the plane and you could have many free drinks and the cabin staff said we drank 5-6 tins of Heineken and that was the limit for a passenger. I was 19 . When I got to New York, I was in awe at the place , was like a different planet. There was a feel about the place that you rarely get anywhere else.

What a lovely, nostalgic video. I actually preferred the old livery to the one Aer Lingus has now. I flew on this same plane to and from New York in the summer of 1987. Thanks again JustPlanes!!

Those were the days! Have happy memories of seeing them many times at the airport as a child. Loved when one would be parked at B gates where I would usually be boarding a more short haul craft. Never flew in one of Shamrock's, sadly. Also recall sitting on the roof of my Dad's car at the viewing bay on the perimeter road watching planes taking off and landing. The Jumbo's were so massive! No airlines run a scheduled 747 service out of Dublin since, afaik. :/

Great to see these old EI birds. Thanks for the upload! But these jets must have flown half empty! I can't imagine how they could filled a 747 on DUB-BOS. Oh how times have changed...
@80sfreak14

amstevenson well why do you think that they switched to the A330? If there was demand they would've replaced them with something like a 747-400. But unfortunately there wasn't enough demand between Ireland and the US to support a 747 so they switched to the midsize A330. It's really unfortunate, my dad remembers flying the 747s as a child in the 80s and probably better yet, my mom remembers flying on LOT Polish Airline's IL-62Ms across the Atlantic! Those were the days when aviation was interesting, now it's boring composite made twin engine airliners everywhere. Sad.

Anyone know why the back and upper deck doors are open?
@sanchoodell6789
9 жыл бұрын
Life According To Collin It was common practice back then for Aer Lingus to fly its Boeing 747s with the back and upper deck doors half open (or half shut depending on your view point) This was to ensure that the aircraft remained cool, well ventilated and comfortable for the crew.(remembering that smoking was still allowed on flights) The upper decks of Aer Lingus 747s were reserved for AL staff and are designated for the crew quarters, not for passengers, so passenger safety was not a concern. Operating with these doors open was also considered good practice as in the event of an emergency evacuation. Crew can vacate the aircraft more rapidly. But eventually this practice was deemed unsuitable and the Irish flag carrier had to abandon this practice.
