“Comrades, we probably will die here to the glory of motherland. Let motherland know how we fight here, how we defended Moscow. Russia is great, and there’s no way back, Moscow is behind us”, these words were pronounced in this very place not far from village Dubossekovo, in a cold November of 1941. The person speaking was Klochkov Vassiliy Georgiyevich, one of 28 Panfilov’s guardsmen.
For more than four hours 28 guardsmen had been restraining the breakthrough of a huge tank concentration of Germans on their way to Moscow, which let the Soviet military commanders draw the troops off to the new frontier and move up reserves. The battle near Dubossekovo went down in history as the deed of 28 Panfilov’s guardsmen, and all soldiers were awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union in 1942. The remains of dead Panfilov’s men were buried with military honor in village Nelidovo in spring of 1942.
In 1967 the Museum of Panfilov’s guardsmen was established in village Nelidovo (1.5 km from Dubossekovo). The museum exhibits items related to names of Panfilov’s heroes I.V. Panfilov, V.G.Klochkov, I.D.Shadrin, as well as memoirs of Panfilov’s men, original battlefield letters, newspaper files, and photos.
A memorial complex dedicated to the “Heroic deed of 28”, which is comprised of 6 monumental figures representing soldiers of six nationalities among 28 Panfilov’s men, was built in 1975 at place of the battle.
