I was in Jr. High and High School when Aerosmith burst upon the music scene, and then graduating from college (watching MTV) when Permanent Vacation came out - so my rankings are representative of those days. Draw the Line, a huge disappointment to me after the brilliant Rocks, could have been so much better had it been recorded decently - most of the album is a turgid mess sonically. The boys were all drugged up and just didn't care. Critical Mass is still one of my favorites though. So, Draw the Line flopped in 1977, the new shiny object in 1978 was Van Halen, and Aerosmith basically hit the skids for a decade until Permanent Vacation. Lost touch with their "newer" music after Permanent Vacation as I dove into the deep end of the jazz and then the deep, deep end of the classical swimming pools. I will still spin my minty vinyl copies of these occasionally when I'm in the mood for some hard rock. Thanks for the video! My Top 5: 1. Rocks 2. Toys in the Attic 3. Get Your Wings 4. Aerosmith 5. Permanent Vacation

I didn't add Bobo, it's a covers record. I'm 51, love Aerosmith, early stuff most by far. 14. Just pop drivel. I like a couple of the tunes, as pop songs. 13. Another Dimension. There I was hoping Douglass would bring some balls back...nope. 12. Get a Grip. Some of has aged well for me, some of it not at all. They kicked ass on this tour though. 11. Permanent Vaca. I like a lot of tunes on this one, but don't really love any. 10. Mirrors. It's kinda missing that big hook, single. But it's a cool cover to cover listen. I've always liked this. 9. 9 Lives. I love this record, seemingly more than most do. If they chopped off the worst three songs, they'd still have a full album and it would probably jump a couple places. 8. Rock in a hard place. Overlooked cuz the lineup, period. Tunes are solid. Lightening is a killer. 7. Pump. The best of the corporate era. 6. Right in the Nuts 5. Draw the Line 4. Rocks 3. Debut A 2. Toys A+ 1. Wings A++ Wings was my intro way back when, and still my favorite.

I just made a video about Aerosmith myself so I was interested in your list. I enjoyed your comments about each of the albums. I think my opinions would be similar. It’s cool that you got into the band at basically the same age as I did but we’re two years apart, so for me Done With Mirrors was a new release after I’d already got Rock in a Hard Place, Rocks, Toys in the Attic, and Aerosmith plus a greatest hits album. great video, thanks! Here's mine: 15 Music From Another Dimension (2012, F, too much sweet soul singing, zero hard rock) . . . 14 Honkin' On Bobo (2004, D+, too many covers, too much sweet soul singing over the top of hard rock blues, The Grind doesn't rock) . . . 13 Night In The Ruts (1979, C, half the album is amazing classic hard rock, the ballad Remember is fantastic, but a couple of anchovies and mediocre filler spoil what could of been grade-a Aerosmith) . . . 12 Just Push Play (2001, C+, a lot of great music and good vocal performance by Tyler, but all the lyrics are about falling in love. This isn't the bad boys from Boston lyrics) . . . 11 Nine Lives (1997, C+, a few great songs, but unfortunately, the hard rock tunes sound very grungy and 90s ish. also, Hole In My Soul is way to sappy sweet for Aerosmith. but Kiss Your Past Goodbye and Ain't That A Bitch are ballads that sound dirty sweet, perfect for Aerosmith. Falling In Love, a rocker, is a favorite) . . . 10 Aerosmith self titled debut album (1973, B, every song is great boogie rock, very catchy, except the classic, Dream On. my music taste is 80s style hard rock with Sabbath sounding electric metal guitars) . . . 9 Get A Grip (1993, B+, great album start to finish featuring the trio of rockin' ballads, the rest of the album jams too, unfortunately, only Eat The Rich is really hard rocker like I like, and they cut "Don't Stop" from the album, one of my favorite hard rockers, and put it on the b-side to Grammy winning Livin' On The Edge. I like Don't Stop far better, so I'm holding the album back from an "A" ranking for that, and not rockin heavy enough. . . . 8 Pump (1989, B+, great tunes start to finish, especially Young Lust and Voodoo Medicine Man, but I'm pulling the album back from an "A" ranking because Steve Tyler switched to a sweet soul singing style, and the lyrics were definitely honed for winning Grammys rather than their classic bad boy lyrics, for example, I easily imagine Love In An Elevator would have been recorded as Up In An Elevator had it been written just a couple of years earlier. In fact, they admitted they honed the lyrics for PMRC, but not lyrics for Janie that said, "put a bullet in his brain" on their first Grammy winner Janies Got A Gun. It's a real downer song, can only listen to it when listening to songs that are not by Aerosmith, odd but true) . . . 7 Done With Mirrors (1985, A, even though this album never achieved a hit, or an award, or platinum status, I love it, because of all Aerosmith's album this is the one album that sounds like it was recorded in one place, on one day. All the guitars and drums and vocals have a distinctly macho Done With Mirrors sound. All the songs are good to great, but zero choruses, horns, or studio gimmicks. I can easily listen to this start to finish, and I had the original cassette tape with mirrored letters, even the credits were all mirrored. This album is so cool, so macho, and so hard rock that I have to give it an "A" even if the band now stinks all over it with their comments. But that's okay, because they like sweet soul music best now, not me) . . . 6 Get Your Wings (1974, A, they really open up on their second album, lots of fantastic guitar work, the only lull is their final tune. Still, songs like S.O.S. , Lord of the Thighs, Seasons of Wither, Spaced, Woman of the World, Same Old Song and Dance, Train Kept a Rollin' so so good) . . . 5 Rock In A Hard Place (1982, A, 80s metal sound on this one. I love the change of sound, and the hard 80s metal rockers like Lightning Strikes, Title Track, Bolivian Ragamuffin, Bitches Brew, Jail Bait, plus very interesting metallic like balladry of Jonies Butterfly and Prelude to Jonie, so good, and even the filler tunes Jig Is Up and Push Come To Shove are great enough to applaud, and for ballads, Cry Me A River is Steven Tyler''s best vocal performance of all time, excellent, without sounding so sappy and sweet, though it really it, this is fine honey not corn syrup) . . . 4 Toys In the Attic (1975, A+) a perfect album start to finish, the only flaw being that it definitely doesn't have a consistent sound, hence the name "Toys" which to me is a diversity song warning, and that it is, from metal to blues to balladry to mid tempo to funk rock, it's got everything, a true mix), 3 Rocks (1976, A+, another perfect album, this time keeping to fast speed hard rock, except for the sweet ballad at the tail end. Cited by Slash as an inspiration for Appetite) . . . 2 Draw The Line (1977, A+, this is like Rocks, except rawer, and with grittier guitars, maybe a bit slower. To me, I would say this album would have made a great prequel to GnR Appetite, had Axl been in the singers seat. I can't find any flaws, and lacking a ballad, that's actually okay by me. This was my first ever CD, I bought it in 1988 as a Collectors Choice edition CD. Aerosmith still hadn't converted all their albums to CD at that time, so they picked the next best one to bring to the public, and I think it was a great choice) . . . -- 1st place -- Permanent Vacation (1987, A++, Aerosmith came back with an 80s metal album considering black sabbath guitar sounding tracks but with GnR energy (who released their Appetite the same year) listen to Hearts Done Time, Magic Touch, Simoriah and The Movie. Instead of sweet soul singing Steve Tyler does his metal demon screaming at full volume, and this album overall sounds masculine and energetic through and through, even Angel steers clear of the modern trademark sweet soul singing, and sticks to true 80s Power Ballad formula. Hard rockin speed blues also: Hangman Jury, and Steven Tyler's last ever solo written song, St. John, plus in house written rockers Girl Keeps Coming Apart and the Title Track. The band helped write all the other songs too, except the one Beetles cover, I'm Down, which literally screams . . . verdict Best Album Of All Time, including the more pop tracks Rag Doll and Dude (which was about Vince Neil, aka Motley Crue's singer)
