Agasthyarkoodam Trek is the most important trek in kerala. Agasthyakoodam (Agasthyamalai) is in Peppara wildlife sanctuary and involves 40+ KMs trek. Agasthyarkoodam is also called as Agasthyamalai, Agasthyakoodam, Pothigai Malai etc.

Sage Agastya (Agastya Muni) is one among the Saptharishis. His name is referred in Mahabaratha, Ramayana Epics and Skunda Purana. During the holy marriage of Lord Siva and Parvathi Devi, the whole world came to Himalaya and earth's equilubrium is lost. To fix the same, Lord Siva sent Sage Agastya to South of India and he meditated at Agasthyamalai and earth regained balance. During the war between Rama and Ravana, Rama was not able to Kill Ravana and he took advice of Agastya; Agastya taught him AdityaHridaya Mantra and Rama could kill Ravana. He is also referred in several other historical books, including Jataka books of budha and there are stories related to him in several East Asian countries Indonesia, Combodia, Vietnam etc.
Agasthyarkoodam is part of Agasthyamalai Biological Reserve and is part of UNESCO's world network of Biospheres. Peppara, Shenduruny, Neyyar wildlife sanctuaries along with adjoining areas of Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger reserve form the Agasthayamalai Biological Reserve.
Agasthyarkoodam trek involves trekking through different terrains - grasslands, shola forest, evergreen, semi evergreen, moist deciduous forests etc. It involves crossing waterfalls, climbing rocks with ropes attached and its probable you may witness elephants, guars etc. So always be vigilant and obey rules always. Agasthyarkoodam trekking can be done in season by booking online ticket through forest department's website, normally season trek will be from Jan 2nd week to Sivarathri date. Special permission request need to be taken from Forest department for Agasthyarkoodam Offseason trek.
Agasthyarkoodam trek can be done in 2 or 3 days; both options involve reaching at Athirumala Base camp by Day1 end and stay there. On Day2 morning, Agasthyarkoodam summit can be attempted and after that return back to Athirumala. If 2 Day trek option then need to return back to Bonacaud forest pickup station on the same day. If 3 Day trek, relaxe and stay at Athirumala base camp and return back next day morning.
Agasthyarkoodam is an experience every forest/nature lover should cherish once in their life.
