What a total bad ass helicopter with the twin engines and four blades with supersonic tips! They should convert some of the older ones to this configuration. The Zulu Viper started to roll off the line in Dec 2000. They're still manufactured and current generation. The SuperCobra (AH-1W) was introduce in 2986. The SeaCobra (AH-1J) may have seen some *very* limited time in Vietnam (1971 introduction). The Vietnam-era Cobras were single engine designs. Everything since 1971 are twin engine. There are likely to be plenty of AH-1 Cobras around since they only stopped production in 2019. The latest AH-1 variant is the 1G, which was $11 million new. They can be had for a tick over $2 million now.

@geneg6343

The sound changed once they went to the 4 blade main rotor system. I had over 3,600 hours as a Crew Chief on the UH-1N (Huey) while I was on active duty from 1984 - 2004 in the Marine Corps. One early morning (0600 hours) and we were taking off from MCAS Yuma. We flew over a mobile home park and the pilot pushed the cyclic forward for max speed and pulled up on the collective and the 2 main rotor blades where making the lovely whop, whop noise as the main rotor blades sliced through the air. Mid way over the mobile home park we made a hard right 90 degree turn and the sound of the main rotor blades increased in sound, it was great. The pilot said, " Thats the sound of freedom boys". This was back in 1989 or 1990 and I will never forget it.
