Αιgeira Stadium | A soccer field by the sea
A football stadium different from the rest of Greece is located in the coastal village of Αιgeira. Unique for its natural beauty, it is an ornament for the small village due to its impressive location.
The football field is located a stone's throw from the village of 1500 inhabitants where it hosts amateur team matches and people of all ages who want to play sports run and train on it.
Αιgeira is one of the first villages we meet along the Gulf of Corinth, entering the prefecture of Achaia and is located approximately 1.5 hours from Athens and 50 minutes from the city of Patras. Every summer, it gathers dozens of vacationers, having developed together with Akrata, into one of the most popular vacation spots in Achaia.
In recent years, the first inhabitants of Αιgeira came from Arfara, Vella, Vergouvitsa and other mountainous villages of eastern Aegialia, but also from various parts of Greece (Roumel and Epirus).
The first houses of Αιgeira began to be built around 1887, at the time when the train stop was established at the spot where the well-known railway station building is today.
Centered on this attitude, a large residential and commercial movement developed and little by little the "port" of the mountain villages was created. There is no information on the number of inhabitants of the settlement of Αιgeira before 1900, since the few inhabitants of the settlement, which later became the community of Αιgeira , were registered in the mountain villages from which they came. For the first time, Αιgeira was listed separately as an autonomous settlement in the year 1907 and had 125 inhabitants, while Marmara, which was also censused that year for the first time, had 106 inhabitants, out of a total of 1867 inhabitants of the municipality of Αιgeira . In the year 1920, the population of Αιgeira increased to 261 and the inhabitants of Marmaras became 327. In the year 1928, the census registered 267 inhabitants in the community of Αιgeira and 57 inhabitants in the settlement of Marmaras. Αιgeira in the first two decades of the 20th century was a small settlement, its sea front extended from Tholopotamos to the Aries river, the houses were few and most of the residents were seasonal.
Certainly Αιgeira, in summer, but also in spring and autumn, is one of the places that, although it is several kilometers from Patras, is worth visiting.
