You should see a carrier from underneath, in drydock. When I was on the Forrestal, she went into the Philly shipyard for a 2-1/2 year overhaul called SLEP. As an ET, all of our gear was off ship, so we had other duties while in the yard. Initially, I was a supervisor in the Fire Watch Division. So we'd have an idea of what we were sending our guys into, we were given a tour with the gas free engineer (who certifies spaces are okay for humans to enter). At one point, we dropped through a scuttle in the deck and found ourselves climbing down the outside of a tank, in a void space. At the bottom, we stepped down through a cut hole in the hull, onto a step ladder, then to the drydock floor. You think a carrier looks big from alongside in a boat, try looking up at it maybe ten feet over your head.
