Also the youtube video " Mod-01 Lec-02 Axial Flow Compressors and Fans. " , after the 30 minutes explaines very well the velocity triangles. Thank you Roddy Mc Namee and Pradeep :-) .

Would it be possible to make a video on how to apply the Euler's turbine equation to solve these problems? (How to find the blade angles and flow angles)

Is it the velocity of the fixed blade with respect to the moving blade?

You are a saviour Roddy. Best, concise video on Velocity triangles. I have just one question though: Is theta(IN) usually known to the designer?
@RoddyMcNamee
4 жыл бұрын
Daniyal Altaf Baloch , in my opinion the engines operate in a narrow RPM range, therefore the rotational velocity of the blades is also in a narrow range. The axial velocity of the air in is around Mach 0.4. Therefore, the input angle range (theta in) should be identifiable to the designer. The use of variable inlet guide vanes can help in this regard also.

Friend , I could not understand relative velocity of air. first blade moves towards right the top side air moves towards left,bottom side air moves towards right. could u please explained this.

The first stage rotor blade rotation direction is given to wards right and why its direction is given to the left while drawing the velocity diagram.?
@RoddyMcNamee

The velocity diagram shows the velocity of the air and not the blade. It's like when an aircraft moves forward, the direction of the aircraft is forward, but the direction of the airflow over the wing is backwards.

+Roddy Mc Namee , there is a problem at the entrance to first rotor and second rotor U=w.r is reversed. When you add U and the relative velocity vectorialy, you are supposed to obtain the absolute velocity. Sum of D and C will be equivalent to B. Sum of J and I will be H. I am afraid the two velocity triangles at rotor inlets may cause confusion. Otherwise I like your presentation.

The vectors C and I have the wrong sense of direction. It's supposed to point in the direction of the circumferential speed (rotation).
@joestuttard1495

No. The C and I represent the relative velocity of the air relative to the blades rotation, it is correct that they are in opposite directions. Try thinking about being the air, approaching the spinning blades. The imagine the blades stop spinning, and as the air, you're motion must create the relative motion previously seen. (Hope that helps)

Thank you! I don't get what the red arrow is?! It's opposite the direction of rotation.
@RoddyMcNamee

It's the direction of the airflow due to the rotation. If the blade moves down, the airflow over the blade moves up.

What if the ram air speed is zero when the airplane is not moving?
@RoddyMcNamee

+Aviator168 Good question. The higher velocity air at the fan tips will cause a decrease in pressure that will draw the air into the engine.

+Roddy Mc Namee An other question. If the stator vanes are directing the air flow in the other direction, would we get a large delta whirl per stage?
@RoddyMcNamee
8 жыл бұрын
Aviator168 The problem with the stator vanes directing the air flow in the other direction is that the angle of attack between the rotor blades and the airflow would become too high and the blades would stall.
@FlexibleBladeTurbine

@@RoddyMcNamee I am not sure whether that statement holds. For the angle the air is deflected in the shown direction there exists an angle on the opposite side that will result in the same angle of attack. However the magnitude of the vector will be larger. So drag and impulse are increased and cause unwanted losses in an axial compressor. For the propeller of a ship this effect can be used to increase the axial thrust.
