Easily. I was thinking 1990 was pretty bad, for me there is the tiniest bit of depth there. Best Year: Tough call between 1991 and 1994. 1991 has my 2 favorite albums of the decade and easily the most important year, but I have to say 1994, because of its incredible depth. Awesome work guys. I don't have many years left of albums, and by the end of the next decade I'm done. Sometime in there I lost my desire for new music. I guess I just got old.

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road -Lucinda Williams ('98) 7. Exile in Guyville -Liz Phair ('93)* 8. When The Pawn... -Fiona Apple ('99) 9. See You On the Other Side -Mercury Rev ('95) 10. My favorite year is '91, my least favorite is probably '98 or '99 (but through this process I found even those years to be pretty good.) Artists who where under consideration multiple times but never actually made my top 5: Stereolab, World Party, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, Sebadoh, Stone Temple Pilots, Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Massive Attack, Cranberries, Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, Blur, Suede, Hole, Garbage, Wilco, Sleater-Kinney, Modest Mouse, Supergrass, Built to Spill, Ben Folds Five

Winners of the 90s ranked: 10. King Crimson - Thrak (1995) 9. Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville (1993) 8. Deniz Tek - Take it to the Vertical (1992) 7. Odyssey Band/James Blood Ulmer - Reunion (1998) 6. Robert Wyatt - Shleep (1997) 5. Walkabouts - Setting the Woods on Fire (1994) 4. Ass Ponys - The Known Universe (1996) 3. Richard Thompson - Mock Tudor (1999) 2. Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages (1991) 1. Brian Eno/John Cale - Wrong Way Up (1990) I have to say that I cannot really compare these great albums to the 70s or 80s because except for #8, none of these albums could have been released in the earlier times. They would not exist without the past, nor would I probably have listened to them without my past. Lingering artists of the 90s, i.e. they have strong albums throughout the decade but never made it to the lists. - Ani DiFranco - Lucinda Williams - Maria Muldaur - Son Volt - Izzy Stradlin - Indigo Girls - Iris DeMent - Stone Temple Pilots - Robyn Hitchcock PS - PJ Harvey and Sleater-Kinney would appear in an overall 90s top ten had not their albums come out in the "wrong" years respectively. Not too important, since they rule the 2000s anyway... PPS - My most important artists (I mean this very personally because they changed MY listening attitudes the most and opened new doors for me) of the 90s probably are James Blood Ulmer and PJ Harvey.

For Me: 10) Ring by The Connells ‘93 9) Free for All by Michael Penn ‘92 8) Mars Pennsylvania by John Southworth’96 7) Car Wheels on a Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams’98 6) Penthouse by Luna ‘95 5) Bellybutton by Jellyfish ‘90 4) Wildflowers by Tom Petty ‘94 3) 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields ‘99 2) OK Computer by Radiohead ‘97 1) Out of Time by R.E.M. ‘91 I grew up as a kid in the ‘80s listening to music, but looking back now I find a lot of the music of that time sounding rather cheesy. I can still look back to the time periods of the ‘50s up through the ‘70s, and I’ve got my artists and albums which I admire, love and respect. But I was never anymore passionate, than I was when listening to “new” music in the ‘90s!!

Meanwhile, at the more commercial end of the spectrum, here are my favourites from a decade of varying quality: 10. (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? - Oasis (95) 9. The Hush - Texas (99) 8. Sheryl Crow - self titled (96) 7. 5 - Lenny Kravitz (98) 6. In It For The Money - Supergrass (97) 5. The Division Bell - Pink Floyd (94) 4. Mama Said - Lenny Kravitz (91) 3. Bellybutton - Jellyfish (90) 2. Automatic For The People - REM (92) 1. Fate Of Nations - Robert Plant (93) The best year for me was 93, whilst 96 was probably the weakest. I definitely preferred the first half of the decade, as the end of the golden era of rock music wasn’t good from my perspective.

I haven't done an official list of the 90s, but there were a few favorites that I wanted to throw out there from the decade that I didn't hear much coverage of in any of the videos, and that I think are worth checking out if you haven't already. Pulp - Different Class (Most of the other big Britpop bands got some run, but this album is probably my favorite from any of those bands.) Johnny Cash - American Recordings (Really surprised to not hear some mention of this one. Turned Cash's career around, and it is a great set of songs.) Los Lobos - Kiko (Such a diverse collection of sounds on this one, and the band nails all of them. America's best band...there, I said it.) Sugar - Copper Blue (I prefer this one to Nevermind from around that same era. Great songs, and I really like this group of players with Bob Mould.) Paul Weller - Wild Wood (Nice blue eyed soul record from the Modfather. Even the instrumental tracks don't ruin this one for me.) Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon (Their debut, Fuzzy, is pretty good too, but this album (and band) should have been much bigger.) Nick Lowe - The Impossible Bird (Lowe had been working towards a more mellow, country-ish sound, but he nails it on this sleeper from the decade.)

Ranking my top albums from each year: 10. El Corazon by Steve Earle (97) 9. Dirt Track Date by Southern Culture on the Skids (95) 8. Ritual de lo Habitual by Jane's Addiction (90) 7. Million Now Living will Never Die by Tortoise (96) 6. Good News for Modern Man by Grant Hart (99) 5. The Black Light by Calexico (98) 4. Unplugged by Nirvana (94) - even though this is a mix of covers and new arrangements of their earlier music, Cobain's performance is one of the best performance of all time. An amazing recording. 3. Out of Time by R.E.M. (91) 2. Slanted and Enchanted by Pavement (92) 1. Cure for Pain by Morphine (93) A weird decade for me in that I don't find myself returning to music from this decade as often as I do the 80s (the best decade by a mile for me), but the really strong albums and acts have become mainstays. These top 7 albums hold their own with anything in my collection and some of my favorite bands and genres emerged from this decade. Lots of 80s artists stayed relevant in the 90s and put out great work. A lot more women artists than in the 70s or 80s (even if none got to my top album in any year. Throwing Muses was 2nd in 91, Stereolab was 2nd a couple of years too).

I'd love to see you guys do The Grateful Dead. Ranking the studio albums would be the easiest thing even though apart from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty they're not really known for their studio albums. I suppose you could also rank the live albums that were officially released by their label (trying to rank the all the live bootlegs would be impossible, obviously.) For my money, Jerry Garcia is one of the most talented musicians of the 20th century. How many people can make a claim to being one of the 50 greatest songwriters as well as one of the 50 greatest guitar players? That's a really short list of people.

I love the 90's - I think that most of the GREAT music was underground and indie music - not the mainstream pop stuff. In fact, I'll bet most of you do not know Geoff Beran (an indie pop/rocker with a smartass lyrical sense from Bloomington, IL), Nil Lara, or Gus Black - and though Iain Matthews is a LEGENDARY (Fairport Convention/Matthews Southern Comfort/Plainsong) singer/songwriter for over 50 years, he was only mildly "famous" in the 1970's and, despite a huge cult following, he barely gets noticed in the mainstream. Sad, because he's still making GREAT records in his mid 70's today. 1990: IAIN MATTHEWS - Pure & Crooked (#7) 1991: MATTHEW SWEET - Girlfriend (#9) 1992: TORI AMOS - Little Earthquakes (#4) 1993: JELLYFISH - Spilt Milk (#10) 1994: IAIN MATTHEWS - The Dark Ride (#1) 1995: RADIOHEAD - The Bends (#2) 1996: NIL LARA - Nil Lara (#5) 1997: SARAH McLACHLAN - Surfacing (#8) 1998: GUS BLACK - Word of Mouth Parade (#3) 1999: GEOFF BERAN - Geoff Songs (#6) Those are my faves. I would say Rufus Wainwright, Richard Thompson, Nirvana, Radiohead's OK COMPUTER, Uncle Tupelo, and Son Volt are all missing from the #1 for the years - and would rank higer than some listed here (as may other albums by some on this list, like Tori Amos' BOYS FOR PELE).

Great someone mentions Iain (or Ian) Matthews (he used both name variations) here. He is another of those artists with a consistent discography for 50+ years with many gems to discover. While he is not top 5 for any year for me, I collect his albums since the Fairport days. Personally I prefer his 70s albums and the albums in the new millennium over the 80s and 90s releases but there are always good performances even there.

@@TastesLikeMusic I think the 00s burst with great music. What has become very different is that artist's and band's careers last much longer, bands stay for decades now but the time between their albums gets much longer. In the 70s you could have 1 album from an artist every year, many even released 2 per year with tours in between (and a live album) and then burned out. Now bands with a 20 years career are not rare and artists develop and change over time. No artist or style dominates anymore - which also means that probably no two people will have the same view/experience. There are armies of new players while some household names still continue or even come back. Fine, mass is not class but the chance for great or very good albums gets pretty high with all the variety.

For the '90's it's 2 bands getting 3 nominations. 10- No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne (1991) -the only album that wouldn't make a top 50 '90's 9- Pork Soda by Primus (1993) 8- Evil Empire by Rage Against The Machine (1996) 7- Hot Dogma by TISM (1990) 6- Sehnsucht by Rammstein (1997) 5- www.tism.wanker.com by TISM (1998) 4- The Battle Of Los Angeles by Rage Against The Machine (1999) 3- Machiavelli And The Four Seasons by TISM (1995) 2- Mellow Gold by Beck (1994) 1- Rage Against The Machine by Rage Against The Machine (1992)

I have to say that I have completely missed the Radiohead boat. They seem really really overrated to me. I could barely get through OK Computer. Do I need to enjoy prog rock to enjoy Radiohead?

@@burmajones803 liking prog rock definitely helps grease the wheels on albums like OK Computer and Kid A. But I get this all the time from my friends- that Radiohead is massively overrated. And I can kind of see their point. I mean, the Stones and The Beatles each have more than 40 songs that made the Billboard Top 40. Radio has 2. That's kind of ironic considering their name is Radiohead.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Really? I would say loving James Taylor helps more. If you knew bands like Tangerine Dream you probably have no need to endure Radiohead. But, people in the 90s had a different view on prog anyway...they mistook progressive for a certain sound that was already old in the second half of the 70s. But that is another story...

@@roxannewalsh true, when you say the word 'prog' to an American like me it invokes a set of bands that may not be considered "true prog" for someone else who grew up in a different context. Such is the nature of music. Subjective.

What is the deal with Dave Matthews Band? I am not american so I don't know much about him or the band except that I downloaded a few songs illegally (on no!) many years ago after seeing a friend liking them. I think the music was fine but nothing that stuck with me.
