I already like melting stuff, but I could see becoming a *_pyro-artist_* because those tiles look amazing! Makes me wonder how the effects would look on other than white color tiles, like say yellow or red or... The possibilities seem endless! I'm hoping that Lowe's is open on Christmas Eve Morning (today is 2015-12-24) so I can get some of the High Glass 4.25"x4.25" tiles you mentioned in response to a question posted by someone else earlier! Thank You beetlewing for the inspiration and Merry Christmas to all!
@beetlewing

You're very welcome, and Merry (belated) Christmas to you too! I think some combinations of ink and colored tile would work, but it'd have a more subtle effect, since there wouldn't be bright white to push light through the inks to the viewer's eye. I think some combos could look very nice though, like green on yellow, purple on light blue, etc. I'm sure some color combos would end up rather dull though.

Wild Plum. My ultimate Fav! The best color. I go through more yellow that anything for some reason. I think it perks things up and changes so many colors, that it gets used a lot. Do you do anything with the metallic gold or silver? I have. Not sure what to do with it, but if I put a drop of gold inside an ink drop at the same time then blow on it to move it around it comes out pretty cool. I'll search your stuff, see if I can find one about it.

I practiced with this a few times...and one observation is that this works best with New inks. I had some that had been stored for a while - and found that it just didn't light up as good. I may have to add some alcohol to Awaken the colors a bit, and get more of a reaction.... It is fun to play with...esp., if you are going for an abstract look. Do you mostly use Adirondack paints - or have you tried other inks? Thanks again, Juliana And thank you for the compliment on the Alligator Table. Sold it for $85 at a Yard Sale. And two others at a Art Shop for $150 each. I miss living near a city, they are more willing to pay for art work.

Martex, he mentions it at about 6:00: Lay down the ink line quickly and then immediately touch it with the lighter. The starts the burning process and prevents the line from spreading out too wide.

Awesome tutorials, love your curious creativity. I have made some of my own alcohol inks and love them, been playing with everything I can get my hands on, but so far glass has been a challenge, does this fire technique make the ink dye permanent? If not what would you suggest to seal it?
@beetlewing
9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I usually just spray them with polyurethane. I show what I use in my "Alcohol Inks Tutorial FAQ" video, though many spray-on clear coats would work. I don't recommend non-spray, as it can smear the colors, even if it's acrylic/waterbased. Hope that helps :)

Beautiful. Thanks for the demo. I see a lot of artists use the inks on tiles. How do the inks hold up on painted wood surface, like a picture frame?
@beetlewing
7 жыл бұрын
+Frank Rizo I've never tried using them on painted wood. As long as the surface is non-porous and you seal it afterward with a clear coat, the inks should be ok... unless the paint you're applying the inks to is affected by alcohol.

+beetlewing Thanks for the info on the tiles, I have started collecting alcohol inks as I have been working with polymer clay and these look so lovely I want to give it a try. You never answered though if you have to do anything afterwards to seal them to protect the tiles. What, if anything, would you finish them with? Once the alcohol is burned off and the ink set (and sealed?) what sort of things could these be used for? Trivets? Coasters?
@beetlewing
8 жыл бұрын
Wulfgeist Sorry, the integration of Google+ into KZitem comments has made the whole system really squirrelly - sometimes I don't get notified of comments. Anyway, I make tiles and mount them for use as wall art only, so I just coat them with polyurethane. For use as coasters they need a tougher clear coat like pourable resin. +Emily Sturgeon No problem. Also, to answer your first question: without a clear coat the inks can scratch off pretty easily. With a spray clear coat they'll be more scratch resistant but hot mugs will still break them down if used as a coaster. I make my tiles as small art pieces which get mounted onto wooden plaques, so a clear coat works fine for me, as they don't get handled much. Depends on your intended use. :)
