Omg, I just made this exact statement to light-skinned friend of mine. I don't think he realizes the impact colorism has on our society and our psyche because he experiences all of the privileges. Unfortunately, colorism isn't going anywhere, anytime soon, however, the effects can be minimized. I think having these conversations is a step in the right direction. Instead of ignoring the problem and living in denial; acknowledgment and trying to make difference moving forward, is imperative. The key is representation and inclusivity despite hues of skin tone, facial features etc., as well as education and policy changing/making to some extent and ofc introspection, to acknowledge personal biases but humans hate doing that shit. I know I get treated differently bc most ppl don’t even see me as black due to my features. Light skin privilege is a thing and it would be ignorant to deny the colorism that goes on both in general and within the black community. Mixed women are always being pushed to the forefront in media/advertising and being considered black representation bc it’s more digestible to white ppl. It’s now ‘cool’ too look racially ambiguous. It’s a trend that encourages colorism. I hate that we have to say things like “black is beautiful” as if it isn’t an already inherent fact. And that's why folk use euphemisms like "preferences", because when you lay it out frankly it's harder to shake the colourist implications of it.

I’ve noticed on a lot of “Black TV Shows”, (or shows aimed towards a primarily Black or African-American audience) there’s always the light-skinned girl, (like Hilary from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”) whose considered beautiful, but whenever there’s an “ugly” or “mean,” character... They’re usually dark-skinned. Dark skinned actors usually seem to play “fallout” characters, (characters that the other cast members deride and make fun of,) and I remember I used to wonder, watching as a kid, what was supposed to make these characters “ugly,” or why they weren’t featured as often... I never knew it was because of the color of their skin! But now it seems so obvious, which is really sad and also unfair to darker-skinned actors in Hollywood. 😢

@@bnwo Yeah, it’s like they’re an “honorary white,” because they’re married or dating a white person. I also noticed they pair dark and light-skinned Black people together, but almost never do they have two dark-skinned actors play a couple. I know executives and casting directors do it for the sake of “diversity,” but I think it sends the wrong message. The “pretty light-skinned girl,” almost never dates someone who is darker... unless there’s something in the script about how “he’s not good enough for her.” (Though that might have more to do with the negative portrayal of African-American men, on film, in general.) Hopefully, though, people will notice this and change. ❤️

The point on dark-shinned folks having to be exceptionally beautiful is so well put, and in my opinion applies adversely and intersecionally as well. Essentially it seems to me that dark-skinned women/femme-presening indvisuals have to be the epitome of beauty while white men, especially in film and tv, can get away with being unremarkable and sttill be in the lead role.

Film is a creation of white men. In fact every bit of technology you use, the comfortable world you live in is their creation. Why should they not have their own people ? It's only natural. Latinoamerica has a problem with colorism. I´m peruvian so I talked from my country´s perspective, but most of this problem is rooted in colonialism. Natives who were part of the royal family ended up marying colonizers in order to not get killed like the Inca and keep themselves safe. The first mixed race kid was actually the daughter of THE colonizer Francisco Pizarro and an indigenous princess. Mixing was something that spanish colonizer saw as positive, because if native people mixed an certain amount of times they would ended up being white at one point. This obssesion with mixing is sadly alive, you can hear some peruvians (and latinos in general) say things like " You can´t be with this person cuz you have to improve your race" or " you want your kids to look like that?" when you mention that you like someone brown/black.

Girl! I felt all of this. Not to mention the “debates” I get into when I hear other black people, especially ones my complexion or darker say “good hair”, “pretty eyes” etc. I was just at the beach Memorial Day weekend with one of my best friends (she’s white). We went to one of those neighborhood beaches to chill for the weekend. There were a lot more white people there than other. When I tell you… okay, at the bar by the pool, one girl was drunk and she complimented me and said I looked beautiful. However, I knew it was coming and she asked me “How long did it take you to do your hair? I know you girls spend all day at the salon”. In the hot tub, another girl asks me and my friend if we’ve ever been called Ebony and Ivory. I can’t make this up! Its been that weird energy the whole weekend. I had the feeling I was a “safe black” when seen with my friend. So naturally, I was furious when it sunk in and explained it to my friend when we got back to the room. I can’t lie, I got a bit emotional. For people to say we talk about race so much, they are THE FIRST ones to bring it up. I’m a normal person man. I can definitely relate to people having a perception about you before they hear you speak. I get that a lot! Especially when they get to know me and my interests. I love your channel! A lot of times it's not unspoken. Not sure if you know the series Girlfriend's, but the character Toni refuses to date anyone darker than her because "if we had a daughter she'd be darker than me and I don't want her hearing she's 'pretty for a dark skinned girl' her whole life like I did" Toni ultimately marries a white man, and has a daughter. During Toni's entire pregnancy the babies ultimate "good hair" is discussed ad nauseum. In fact when the baby is born that's Toni's first concern. Not her health, weight, alertness, exc... So, if it is being used in a different context, to the one I have experienced, to make other people feel safe and protected from systemic racism than yeah that's great, I just haven't been exposed to that cause I'm white The problem I have with the term is, in my experience, it is it is a very simplistic response to a quite complicated topic and reveals the individual's lack of understanding on said topic but, more importantly, it functions as a response to discussions about racism and shuts it down. It is a waste of time because sure you don't care or you don't see colour but somebody else does, other people do and we where focusing on those people. I get that you have the privilege to miss the little things (because so do I) but this isn't about us, it's about the people who don't have the "privilege" to be treated with basic human rights so can we go back to the topic at hand. Not caring about race is what we should all aspire to do but, in my experience, nobody who genuinely says that actually is uncaring about race and why does that one person's attitude matter in discussion about systemic problems. Because I have only seen either of these used in relation to discussions about racism and as a way to shut them down It might be different in less white liberal circles, cause I get exposed to people who are just apathetic to issues and don't actually want to consider them properly despite siding with change more often than not, but that has been my experience and why I personally can not stand the term. It has just been used as a waste of my time and I get annoyed on others behalf It's an in-between not out right supporting anti racism but trying to be against racism on an individual level, without actually putting in the effort to properly support people of colour, and it fails because it was never meant to succeed

I was thinking the same thing. I get that a lot even though I've never asked. It's like they expect that if they themselves "don't care" the hundreds of years of oppression and murder torture didn't happen. Or at least that it's not a big deal to be brought up and worked out because they themselves aren't racist and therefore pose no threat. Like, sir!? I also have another young cousin, a beautiful 12 year old dark skinned girl, who I constantly remind her of her beauty and intelligence. This is so important for the next generation to know that there’s power and strength in the beauty, character and intelligence.

I live in a predominantly black place and colorism here is very different from the USA, but that's another topic. I like to watch international shows but recently I found it very difficult to stomach African American shows anymore. When I was young there were very many AfAm family comedies with black people of very many hues on TV, and its like it got... worse? Underground, Lovecraft County, Euphoria, every movie Amandla is in the black women who were the romantic leads were getting lighter and lighter and lighter. It's like even the 'middle brown tone' is being phased out lol. I then stumbled upon Snowfall. The lead dude had a great deep complexion and that's when it happened. Not even 30 mins into the episode his dark skin mother had ALL THE PROBLEMS and his cute next-door neighbor was teetering on racial ambiguity (despite her dad being black af) and I just switched off. I'd had enough. This isn't to insult the actors but heavens! Personally, I was only in North America for schooling and got tired from all the microaggressions and I was so triggered by this show it reminded me how unwelcome I felt. Ps. I have darker skin and I get you. Living as a black woman in the USA or Europe is... yeah. Anyway, I just know you're presence on the internet will inspire a young dark-skinned girl in America to launch whatever channel she wants to launch. Great Job!!

Shouldn’t be put on quotes, the algorithm is literally made FOR that, to cater to YOU, of course you have to train it. For example, I’m a white girl, on the curvy side, I noticed I only followed skinny people (all colors, but skinny) I felt bad, then I started to follow more girls like me, it definitely made a change. I didn’t feel sad while browsing social media anymore, but then you have to think for yourself and self reflect and ask, am I following these people because that’s what I SUBSCONSCIOUSLY WANT? My answer was yes, I wanted to be like those skinny girls so I "punished" myself. But then I accepted myself and started reversing my choices. Made a real change. Most some people just never move past that, what they subconsciously want versus the REALITY. Acceptance is the first step.

It’s something that as a fat disabled woman, I feel deeply. Do I put extra effort into looking very polished just because I feel I’m already starting from a lower baseline? Yes. Yes I do. And it’s all tied up with sexism, with how women often feel like we have to decorate the world with our beauty, so if I’m already less beautiful as a fat wheelchair user, I’d best put in that extra effort in order to do my part, ya know? It’s not usually as thought through as that, but having dug deep into my psyche about it, that’s where I’ve ended up. I feel like I’m order to get the same respect (or let’s be honest, not the same level, but any) respect as a disabled fat woman, I’d best be putting my best foot forward at all times. I need to “clean up well” otherwise I’m looked over as if I’m invisible. And I’m not just talking by men, I don’t give a sh!t about men, but people generally. If I put more effort in, I’m more likely to be talked to directly, as opposed to someone talking to whoever is pushing my wheelchair. But it’s a LOT of effort, and that effort is even harder because of my disabilities. I still do it though. And it’s like it’s tainting something I really love. Dress history, makeup and fashion are some of my passions. But feeling like I HAVE to put in extra effort every single time I leave my house, it taints something that I do genuinely love.

I am so with you on the white shirt thing!! My degree is in theatrical Directing and part of what I studied was lighting and how to achieve balance in an image. White shirts are THE WORST. While I was working on my final few shows I made the immediate rule that we would use absolutely no white in our costumes because I just wasn't willing to deal with the lighting. Also, I've had a lot of theatre professionals legitimately complain because it's "harder" to style and light actors with dark skin. If you're reading this and you hear someone say something like that, do me a favor and smack them. It's not harder, it's different, and we were trained using whiteness as a standard. Nobody needs to be making black actors/performers/creators feel bad about that. If you live in a major city and need help learning how to better represent different skin tones in your work, look around for groups that represent or work with a lot of BIPOC creators and ask if someone is willing to help you. Arts folk are nice but don't take it personally if the first person you ask isn't available. I have so much empathy for you, it's so rediculous to for people to judge based on something yiu have no control over

@@alexiasoogrim3036 I totally agree! I hated being teased for something I couldn't change and tried to do everything I could to "look more hispanic" (I later realized people were holding me to a bullshit stereotype of hispanic people because we come in all different skin tones - white, tan, black) I tried to tan, and always ended up with sunburns. Tried to use toning lotions but hated how fake and orange they made me look. Colorism affects everyone, just in different ways. Hopefully all these discussions and videos help people realize the damage their doing to other people with colorism

We are so obsessed with this stuff for no reason, when your being excepted for college no one cares how dark you are, when you're being hired no one cares, they might care what overall race but they won't care if you're dark or light or brown, they might care if you're black but that's it.

my Filipina friend recently discussed with me the colorism they have there. that as a darker skinned Filipina, her grandmother told her to marry a light skinned man so her children wouldn't be as dark, and her mother used to give her skin lightening cream. This was when she was a child, mind you. awful.

I've actively tried to seek out content from darker-skinned black women (Khadija, AsToldByKenya, amandabb) because hearing their perspective really helped me confront my own implicit biases and understand how even though I never tried to be intentionally racist, I nevertheless was unconsciously benefitting from institutional racism and perpetuating the same structure without totally realizing it. The analogy I try to use is if I tell someone my house is clean, but I'm only looking at the walls around the house, whereas someone standing on a ladder could see that my roof was dirty and covered in debris. It's not that I was being disingenuous in my opinion, but more so they had a perspective that I didn't and without it that perspective, my was opinion on how clean my house was was based on an incomplete picture. I'm always grateful for content like this that's not only enlightening, but also entertaining at the same time. Also, you don't need to pull off a white shirt because you've looked killer in every color you wear. Have a blessed Sunday!

Didn't see Princess Weeks, Black Nerd Comedy, or Double Toasted on your list. Eveyone else I could think of off the top of my head was already there. Double Toasted is an ensamble, but the 3 main people include a light skinned black guy, a dark skinned black guy, and a white guy. Then a bunch of others that are also in a lot. They are also mostly on Twitch, but do a lot of clips on KZitem. Edit: Princess Weekes IS on your list, under her channel name. Oops. My mistake. Rashad Ritchie is also starting a new show with TYT Network on Twitch.

Double Toasted is hilarious! But as a Black woman, the lack of Black women represented (whether in the films they review or guest panelist) is non-existent. So non-existent that over time, it became clear that this is simply their choice. Listen to many jokes they make about the Black guy "getting a piece" of the white girls etc. I've seen one woman of colour as a panel guest and that session started with them talking about the fact that she was a mix of German, Black etc. etc. I still love 'em because they're talented with great production. But other than the love of their mothers, it feels like they've determined their audience demographic will only tolerate male Blackness. Maybe featuring Black women is just "too pro-Black."

The only thing the separates Spain and Africa, is an earthquake and antiquity. African Moors ruled Europe (mostly Spain and Portugal) from 711 AD to 1492 AD. They are responsible for civilizing Spain and Europe, although Spanish rulers have tried to erase this from historical records. The African Moors are responsible for bringing Europe out of the Dark Ages. Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography and Philosophy were introduced to Europe, while 99% of the European population were illiterate up until the 1800s. Public utilities, hospitals, universities that issued educational degrees, public libraries, public baths, botanicals, paved roads, illuminated streets, and hygiene maintenance, existed in Africa before Europe. It was through the Moors, paper and Arabic numerals were introduced to Europeans. Africa has the world's oldest spoken and written languages, and the birthplace of advanced mathematic concepts that are still learned in schools today. Medical procedures performed in ancient Africa before Europe: vaccinations, autopsy, limb extraction and broken bone setting, bullet removal, brain surgery, skin grafting, filling of dental cavities, installation of false teeth, Caesarean sections, anesthesia and tissue cauterization. Architecture, engineering, mining of minerals, metallurgy and tools, navigation, law and religion, philosophy, international trade, and art were surpassed to those in Europe.

As a racially ambiguous person, I've recently noticed that people often comment of my appearance, telling me im beautiful etc. it recently hasn't been sitting well with me and I just couldn't put my finger on why. I'm realizing now that because I fall into the "exotic" box, which happens to be what is considered beautiful at this time, people see me as pretty because I share the same shade as the mostly white influencers who are trying to look racially ambiguous. It's so frustrating that your lived experience isn't seen as valid commentary. Also what are your pronouns?
