These are not books. These are pure audio dramas and one movie script. The books, in my opinion are all pretty much garbage. Alex Whites books are full of unlikable psychos and the Aliens become a backdrop. Phalanx needs 5 hours to get interesting etc. Why anyone would waste their time with this drivel is beyond me. There are a lot of audio books out there (unfortunately not in the Alien universe) that are magnitudes better. If it weren't for the Alien backdrop i don't think anyone would care about Alex Whites trashy books.

I disagree. To me, Sea of Sorrows was the one which was most memorable up until that point. It felt like I was back into this terrifying world. As far as what's the best, to each one's own, but for me it'll be Alien III by Gibson. I wish this was Canon. I like that Lance Henricksen and Michael Biehn returned for their respective roles. It also had a great conic book series and novelization. Alien: Out of the Shadows was really good as well. And I like the actor they picked to voice Ash. Everything about it could be further explorer if they have the Ash program be the same as David. Or maybe he was contaminated by David or on his side. The way he speaks about the Xenomorph mirrors David 8.

Sea of sorrows is my personal favorite because it makes a lot of what I find to be very interesting ideas of the resilience of the aliens being a sequel to Out of the Shadows seeing the hive being relatively undamaged from the nuclear blast and just moving to a state of dormancy with a lack of prey. Which to me strongly suggests that the nuclear blast at the end of sea of sorrows will also most likely make very little difference to the hive in the long run.

My favourite is Alien: Out of the Shadows too, Ash The Evil Corporate Android returns but now he’s an AI in the Computer so his voice has changed from Ian Holm to Rutger Hauer who Hauer himself would have made a great original character in the Alien Film Franchise series too. Good reviews and I largely agree with the order (loved Out of the Shadows). But I ranked River of Pain 4th in part because of things like retconning in a colonial marine garrison on Hadley’s Hope. Damien Beckett is a good character, but the story would have been better if presented as Aliens did: colonists against the xenomorphs without military assistance or weapons.

Honestly I would put Alien 3 audio drama on my #4 pick over Sea of Sorrow simply because I find the way the hybrid was born comes as "Nu'uh, my Alien can do this!" which also rubs me off like in the Alien director cut of how a Drone can turn a victim into an egg. Too many paths of reproduction just felt ill aligned instead of a Drone being able to lay an "emergency Queen" egg. Something that apparently someone agreed with me when they wrote Alien: Prototype.

Thought about this for a while, certainly difficult to rank these since I enjoyed them all but I share the same sentiments in your rankings and reasons. Thanks for putting together a general synopsis and personal point of view for these, they deserve attention and if we’re lucky they will continue to craft content like this in such a way down the road. Oddly enough I enjoyed Sea of Sorrows quite a bit given the distance it put between the original stories we know but still giving homage to a few fine points to correlate the stories. Really like the atmosphere and closing of this one, and the characters were well done in my opinion. Going back to Hadley’s Hope is always a fun ride and I was thankful it was a solid stand alone story and reference for that arc without excessive fan service. Getting our favorites back in the Alien 3 alternate story was a treat, and regardless of the content, which I very much thought was a better way to go for the story than the path they chose, you can’t go wrong with Henrikson and Biehn getting back in the fight personally after decades plus. As far as a true sequel to Alien, I couldn’t think of a more interesting and spine tingling route to take then having Ash haunting Ripley beyond the Nostromo in such a way. The alien itself is terrifying though having a hell bent AI lurking around every corner of all the systems the characters have no choice to rely upon is even more horrifying. Well thought out and fits nicely in place between the two films without going over board. Also, a fantastic job to Hauer for a job well done towards the end of such a great career. Was a great fit and you can tell he was passionate about the role.

I would agree with your ranking as far as the acting caliber goes but if I was rating it on the Alien lore itself I would have to rank it: 1. Out of the Shadows (oh this was was so good!!) 2. River of Pain 3. Sea of Sorrows 4. Alien III. I was not a fan of the direction of the Alien life cycle/evolution in Gibson's Alien III. I just felt it strayed too far away from the classic aspect of the Xenomorph. I mean people turning into xenomorphs was just "off" to me. It was interesting in the way the Gibson was thinking of taking the franchise though and I still enjoy the story but wasn't really into it. I don't really listen to that one often, but the production and voice acting was superb. I felt that Prometheus and Alien: Covenant actually did a better job of showing what the evolution of the Alien would or could look like in regards to the properties of the black goo and how it changes DNA and stuff. They are all really good audible dramas and would recommend giving them all a listen (if you haven't), and especially if you are hardcore alien fan like all of us here are :-).

They are all great! Each in their own way. Personally, the fav for me is Sea of sorrows. So for someone who has never listen to these dramas but are interested. Its highly recommended to start with Out of the shadows before starting with Sea of sorrows, since quote unquote: Sea of Sorrows is a sequel to Out of the shadows. One other thing that I like with these two stories is how they both are bringing up Drukathi from Tim Lebbons Alien vs Predators series Rage War

I would love to see a follow up to River of Pain following Demian Brackett and the other survivors.

I agree with your number one. I really liked it. I think Netflix could make a series in the Alien Universe beginning with these stories.

I think I would have gone with Alien Iii as my number one if they had adapted William Gibson's first draft instead of his revised second draft. The draft they adapted just didn't have enough aliens in it. :)

My number one is also out of shadows! I also running a RPG game basead on this novel! It is Just amazing how it Takes place in different ambients: orbital station, drop ships, mining facilities and ancient ruins! It fits perfectly for RPG adventures!
