Test: Z1 Tiny 2 Gimbal (WIND)
What better way to test the brand new (used actually, but new to me) Z1 Tiny 2 gimbal, than to take it out on the most lousy windy day possible in an untested area.
For the third day in a row, we do exactly that. I drive out in to the middle of nowhere in random Nevada wetlands swamp location to send up the m480 with the Z1 gimbal to see how it handles the wind. It is only blowing 15 mph right here, but gusts are much higher, and as you can see coming in for a landing, you can actually watch the upper right corner of the quad shaking quite a bit. You can't really tell by looking at the trees, but it happens to be really blowing around here today. So, the Z1 (or actually the m480 to be honest) has the most trouble, when flying directly in to 15-20 mph winds, at speeds of 30 mph or greater (which is how fast I am going, when coming back in to land here). It is just too much force for the 10 lb. craft to handle I guess. It was always a major problem for the G2 to handle descents of any kind, or turning in to heavy winds. It would actually reset the G2. And only after a great deal of testing and modifications (bobbins) did I actually reduce this to a reasonable amount (the resets mostly).
Still, the gimbal acts fairly behaved. This is way better than what I would get with the Align G2 gimbal, I can guarantee you that. There is some shake here when descending rapidly, and also when listing against the wind sharply during flight. But this set up is far perfect (or expensive) to begin with so, I am happy with the results today. Most filming will be a lot less intense than this. I have a lot of settings to work with on this Z1, and I have it all set on defaults right now. So, this is only going to get better. The Z1 is a winner.
I need to get one of these on my m470 platform right away, and sell the G2. That will be my next course of action for the m470.
This shoot is a bit of recon for me. I don't know this area at all, and have not shot here. I have, however, rode my mountain bike on the other side of the river, where you can see some trails over there. They lead to a wetlands park. I fly at about 300-350 ft. during this recon run, mainly. I felt like I needed to get up, because I was surrounded by trees, and could not see where I was. This is actually a dead end which I am parked, and there is a chain fence at the end of the concrete landing pad, which prevents me from moving any further. I didn't have to use 4WD to get here, but if it rained, I would absolutely be in trouble, as there are no passenger cars getting to this spot. It is deep ruts and mud mostly. And rain would make it turn to wet clay. Anyone that has experience in 4WD in wet clay (do you live in Utah? lol) can attest to just how difficult it can be. So, one of the things I made sure of is that it was not going to rain while I was out there.
I will come out again. I want to fly out to the Wetlands Nature Center. It is sort of on the outskirts of where I fly today. But not far. I only go out 2500 feet this time. I can go 10,000 ft. with visibility.
The L9R will go out as far as I want to. The m480 can carry 20,000mah (2 lipos), and I know I can get 20 minutes flight time. But you need to be able to fly back. Otherwise you are just flying out there to land some place far far away. The 5.8Ghz equipment is also very good. I only had issues today when flying directly over the top of my location at 325 ft. I had to rotate the ground station antenna to pick up transmission better once also. but overall, the Align 1.5 watt (yes, 1.5 watts) vTx unit is pretty solid. I get B&W video a lot more than I like, but I can go WAY the heck out there on 5.8 Ghz. with no issues or break up at all. This has to be one of the noisiest vTx manufactured, but it does not interfere with the Taranis, and it's 2.4Ghz. radio transmission to the L9R.
Thank you for watching ...
