God the old point system is just so boring. Drivers won’t race for the win when they have a big point lead. 1998, prime example that every race car driver will go for the win no matter how ahead/behind in the points they are.
@chrisshockey3681
4 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? Are you incinuating that Gordon would've won 20 races if he had been trying? I think changing the points system ruined the sport. Consistency should definitely matter . It's a bunch of BS that a driver can crash as many times as he wants as long as he wins he's in . That's like saying a 1-15 team should make the playoffs just because they beat the Patriots. C'mon man. There's a hell of a lot more pressure knowing that if you have one more DNF you're out of the title hunt. May as well give them a participation trophy. Even Jeff Gordon can attest to that . He won 10 races in '96 and didn't win the championship. He's been on both sides of it . He wins 10 under the old system and finishes 2nd in the championship because he had 6 finishes of 30th or worse . Then another year ( not sure which one, I'd have to Google it, but I know it's a fact cause I'm a diehard Gordon fan) he had over a 300 point lead which would've been totally insurmountable with 10 races left. But that lead was completely erased and the driver with more wins was in first when the Chase started. As a matter of fact, Mr. Gordon would have 7 championships had they not implemented the chase. Take a look at Earnhardt Sr's championship seasons and see how many times he won the most races (Not very many times). I'm quite sure he would think it was a joke. Why do you think it has declined so much ? Stands are practically empty. If you know your racing you would remember that 5 drivers were mathematically still eligible for the championship the last race of '92. And as I'm sure you know anything can happen clear down to the last lap. They ran off the lifelong fans as well as the new ones they acquired. Stage racing is ridiculous. They've made a change almost every year since it started. Nothing but a wreck fest at the end of the races now cause the drivers could care less if they tear up these multi- million dollar race cars now, because they know all they have to do is win and finish in the top 30 in points and they're in. Really ? I mean you really think Kyle Busch should be able to miss 11 races and still be eligible just cause he won a couple of races. Totally bogus. Never in a million years could he make up that deficit. That'd be like The Patriots starting 0-11 cause Brady was hurt and they still make the playoffs because of their popularity. It wasn't broken. Examples: Earnhardt by 10 over Wallace, Earnhardt by 12 over Martin, (a year in which Martin was docked 100 points by Nascar for an illegal part), Gordon over Jarrett by 14 points, Gordon over Earnhardt by 37, (by the way that's 8 measly positions) , hell you can lose that in the pits. Last but not least in that '92 race I spoke about earlier Kulwicki over Elliott by 5 points. I used to be able to look at the finishing order and tell how many points my driver gained or lost within a few points. Now I have to wait till the race is over and let the announcers tell me. That's all really a mute point anyway. If you're getting your butt kicked like say in football, um get better. They don't say ok New England you're winning way too much so you only get to play with 10 players this year to make it fair. 😂😂😂😂 The only thing they should have done was give more points for winning. I'm completely fine with that. But erasing points is totally unacceptable. Especially 300 point leads. Ok Mr. Brady you're winning by 7 TD'S at the half so we're going to reset the score at the start of the 3rd quarter. It's a complete JOKE now. Thanks Brian France. I'm sure you're Father would be proud of you for driving this great sport into the ground. Rant over... 😖😖😖😖 Wait no it isn't. 13 out of 33 isn't trying. Including the last race. No way you can tell me Mark Martin wasn't trying when he won 7 races. Any other year but that one is his Championship...

Chris Shockey This is exactly how I feel on the subject. I too am a die hard Gordon fan. NASCAR fell off a cliff once they implemented the new points system. Thats when I stopped caring so much. Gordon was untouchable in 07, I believe it was. He had the biggest lead in NASCAR history going into the playoffs. But, since Jimmie Johnson had won one more race than Gordon in the regular season, Jimmie started the playoffs in first with a 20 point lead over Gordon. I mean what kind of stupid fucking shit is that?!?! There is no way in hell Jimmie wins 5 in a row under the regular points system. No body would ever win that many in a row. Not even Dale Sr. or Jeff Gordon. I’m not hating on Jimmie, I think he’s an excellent driver. But I just can’t bring myself to call him a true 7 time champion. I just can’t do it.

It also makes it boring when you try to force every year to be like 1992 at the cost of someone’s hard work... 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016... 2018 (big 3 anyone?!). So yeah when you have a few years like 1998 and then have a crazy year like 1992 that follows, it makes it more special... do you expect every Super Bowl to be super close and if it isn’t so you expect the NFL to just manipulate things?
