The Canadian Provincial flags do a better job of being symbolic, unique and representative of their region than do US state flags, but don't have the simplicity of design and distinctness from a great distance that is desired of a flag. A seal is meant to be read up close, with detail obvious, on paper or on a banner. Flags are often seen from kilometers away, flapping in the wind, or hanging flaccid in a dead sky. In those situations NB and BC would be unrecognizable and Manitoba's and Ontario's would be indistinguishable. This is also true of most American state flags (ever tried to tell whether you're in Idaho or Montana just by driving past a flag in the rockies? impossible) I say good on ya to Quebec and Saskatchewan (although SK lost the plot keeping the seal really). Nunavut does pretty great to be honest as well. I like the symbolism of the Yukon and the NW Territories using the Canadian Pale on a territorial level, but they dropped the ball when they said "Aaaaand then we slapped the seal in the middle" and called it a day. Overall, from your random neighborhood amateur vexillologist, I give it a B for the Territories, and B- for the provinces. Not terrible, but room for serious improvement.

Would the Uruguay solution have been an idea? Nowadays, they fly the new flag, but two old flags have retained official status, and on many official buildings and official holidays, all are flown. I do think keeping the ensign is a little bit strange for an independent nation, most former British colonies have adopted a very different design and Canada is no longer part of the British Empire.

Quebec’s flag was was officially adopted on January 1, 1948 it the first provincial flag officially accepted by Canada. The Fleurdelisé (that the official name of the Quebec flag) takes its white cross from the ancient royal flags of France. Its white fleurs-de-lis (symbols of purity) and blue field (symbolizing Heaven) come from a banner honouring the Virgin Mary. One such was reputedly carried by French Canadian militia at General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm's victory at Carillon. The flag is blazoned Azure, a cross between four fleurs-de-lis argent. Its horizontal symmetry allows both sides of the flag to show the same image. Legend has it that the use of the fleur-de-lis as an emblem of French royalty dates back to the year 496 when Clovis, the first Christian king of France, was baptized by Saint Remigius and is said to have adopted the flower as his personal emblem. The Colors and Symbols Represent Blue The blue (Pantone 293) is the reminder of the countries that had colonized Quebec. Great Britain and France have blue as the base of their flag. From the religious point of view, it is the symbol of truth and clarity as Mary and Jesus wore clothes of this color. It symbolizes heaven as it is similar to the color of the sky. White The white lines form the cross, and are horizontally isotropic. The source of the cross belongs to regal France. The cross recalls an ancient French military banner. The horizontal line gives the effect of similarity―as above so below. The cross represent the catholic faith. Fleur-de-lis This is a common symbol used by the French kings, which makes people draw a close connection with French symbols. There is one fleur-de-lis in each quadrant, and it is white in color, one for each French Kings (Henri IV, Louis XIII, Louis XIV and Louis XV) that were on the throne when New France was part of the French empire. The white Fleur-de-lis symbolize purity; an original representation of Virgin Mary. According to Christianity, fleur-de-lis represents a lily, which is the symbol of purity. The three petals and sepals can be interpreted as the trinity, i.e., the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It’s considered the best-designed provincial flag. Quebec’s flag’s design has been heralded by the North American Vexillogical Association. Their 2001 study ranked the Fleurdelisé as the best provincial flag and the third-best flag of all U.S. and Canadian state, provincial, and territory flags.

The Union Jack was never abolished in Canada. In order to secure passage of the adoption of the new flag in Canada's Parliament with a minority government in power, it was agreed that the Union Jack would be retained as a flag of Canada (now called the Royal Flag of Canada). This flag can be flown alongside of, or in place of, the Maple Leaf flag. In the mid 1960s, the flag debate was intense, and the new flag least popular on the prairies (Quebec didn't really care). Canada's new flag was called the flag of Peru with the symbol of Ontario in the middle.

As someone who studies heraldry and its allied discipline of vexillology, I have to say that Canada tends to do this better than the US, probably because the British influence remained for such a long period of time. In the US, most state flags are just a sheet with the state seal on them, whereas the Canadian provincial ensigns and banners of arms follow good design customs, to say nothing of how they're more distinctive and readable in many cases.

Visually speaking... - Québec’s flag is perfect. - Nova Scotia and Alberta have very simple flags but they work well. - Newfoundland’s flag is quite unique and to me had a kind of “nautical flags” theme to it. - Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, and PEI are all just strange in their own ways. - British Columbia’s flag is very busy but the colors do compliment one another. It needs some work. - Manitoba and Ontario...come on you can do better than that. Compared to US state flags, Canada gets a solid B. Good but could definitely be better.

I'm from Ontario and I hate the provincial flag. I think it's too old fashioned, and it's probably one reason why I rarely even see it flown anywhere. We do have the Franco-Ontarian flag which I love and is quite symbolic. I'm actually quite jealous of the Québec flag. I love it, I think it looks nice, and I love how people in Québec fly it with pride!

I don't understand the hate for old fashioned things. We're dealing with flags. Unless you want to change them every fifty years, all of them will become old fashioned. I really like the Union Jack, Saint George's cross, Saint Andrew's cross and Fleur de Lis symbolism on Canada's provincial flags. Reminds us of our history, our roots as a society and culture.

The Colonial Office. Sir Arthur Grimble's book A Pattern of Islands or We Chose the Islands has a great description of the Colonial Office in 1912. He is a little tongue-in-cheek, as were some Colonial Office personnel he met there, as he was a recent college graduate. He is very much a representative of the British colonial officer as a friend of the governed rather than an imperial ruler.

@davidbroughall3782 Yet if it wasn't for the British colonial mindset you wouldn't have a parliamentary democracy, common law judiciary, the industrial revolution, abolishion of global Slavery etc etc. The Canadian flag now resembles a corporate husk, it looks like a product of the 1960s, something out of a cheap sci-fi if I'm being honest. The red ensign is what your parents and grandparents fought fascism under, stood for real global change and values. I look at the maple leaf flag and see something that looks a little hokey, almost generic capitalism - you can imagine a chain of Canadian based cafes adopting it as a corporate logo similar to starbucks just with a red theme... I look at the red ensign and see something inspiring.

The use of negative space and geometric shapes in Newfoundland and Labrador’s flag to allude to the Union Jack strikes me as keen and minimalistic. Compared to most of the other flags that are variations on the Red Ensign or their coat of arms, Canada’s youngest province stands out the most. Quebec (which I happen to hail from) and Nunavut are similarly noteworthy and comely.

The Canadian provincial flags are (on average) better than the American state flags. A few American state flags are really classy: Texas, Tennessee, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Alaska, Hawaii, Wyoming come to mind. (Hawaii, btw, is the only US state I believe that still has the Union Jack as part of its flag). AND THEN there are the vast majority of U.S. state flags, that are just a load of crap. Washington State has -- a portait of George Washinton. It gets worse from there. Most of the ones on the East Coast are pretty abysmal. Usually some overly-complicated state seal involving a farmer hugging an Indian riding a horse or some nonsense on a generic blue background. A few of the state flags are dominated with just the state name. Ever forget how to spell "Wisconsin"? Just look at the flag! (Same for Oregon and Oklahoma and Arkansas and Iowa). North Carolina just has "NC" on it, sort of looks like a messed up version of the Texas state flag. Louisiana isn't really good or bad, it's just -- weird. It's got a mama Pelican feeding her baby Pelicans. Same for South Carolina -- it's cool, in a sort of WTF way (there's actually some deeply complicated history if I recall about the Palmetto tree and crescent moon, but to an outsider it just looks kind of random). Maryland and Ohio are also pretty weird. Ohio's is not square. Maryland looks like a Jackson Pollack painting. Mississippi still has the Confederate battle flag as a major part of their state flag, for some damn reason.

@AdamSmith-gs2dv

1. The portrait of George Washington on Washington's flag is actually the State Seal 2. The Pelican on Louisianas flag is apart of the State Seal (though not the whole seal) 3. Oregon's flag is unique, while the front is state seal on blue background trash the back has a cute beaver, this is also the only double sided flag in the US and one of the few in the world. 4. Ohio's flag is based off a military flag flown by Ohio's army during the Civil War called the Burgie, they took this design and modified it to become Ohio's flag in 1901. 5. Maryland's flag is the personal banner of George Calvert, the first Baron of Baltimore. 6. South Carolinas flag dates back to the Revolutionary War, the crescent is based off of the crescent the army wore on their uniforms while the tree represents the palm trees that blocked cannon fire during the battle for Sullivan's Island. 7. Mississippi kept the Confederate Battle Flag (this symbol never was used as the official flag of the Confederate States of America) in the corner because they voted to keep this design in 2001.
@johnhooyer3101

I'll defend Maryland. It breaks the Vexillogical rule of having more than three colors, but in an acceptable way, and it's easy to draw and recognize from a distance. South Carolina's is pleasing to look at and has exactly two colors, which is pretty great, and my only complaint is that the palm tree is hard to authentically replicate. I'll also defend Ohio's somewhat, because it's recognizable and designed so that the swallow tail won't fray. Mississippi has the confederate battle flag on it because they fought for the confederacy, which is the "some reason" (honestly, it's a big deal in the South and, lacking any other widely understood symbol of Southern heritage and identity, that's the one that gets used). I'll agree with the others, for the most part. Except for your opinion that California has a good flag. Recognizable from a distance, sure, but I still hate it. I come from Iowa, which on the bright side is a little more balanced, but otherwise it has the exact same problems as California's flag. I hate it enough that I'm considering writing a letter to the governor and my regional senator to change the flag to something far more solid from a vexillological standpoint. At the very least, I feel like I can safely propose that we take off the name "Iowa" from the flag and it might make its way through the bureaucracy and get approved.

Isn't it funny that when the few people in Canada complain about the colonial symbol on a provincial flags, they miss out the Fleurs de Lys on the Quebec flag. But both are historic and legitimate symbols of Canadian nationhood. There is significant historic continuity with the Manitoba and Ontario flags. The Hudson's Bay Company was permitted to use the Red Ensign from 1682. With the HBC posts at Moose Factory in Ontario founded 1672, and York Factory in 1684, the continuity with the Red Ensign - now in its 4th century, is very apt. Its ironic, given how outspoken many Canadians are about their distinctiveness from the USA, yet a small vocal minority ditching our historic symbols to be replaced with....'no name brand' emblems. Great videos J.J., keep up the good work!

I like some of those simplified designs at 5:22, especially Ontario and Manitoba. They're pretty slick; Ontario's especially seems evocative of Toronto's municipal flag, and looks richly symbolic. Alberta's is dopey, though, with that giant A on it. It looks like a department store logo from the 1970s. It'd be drastically improved without that silly A; maybe even just leaving that gold stripe along the bottom, without the A.

Simon Bolduc yes that was in response not only to his video, but many others. I have no issue with the Canadian flag. JJ always downplays the french canadian relevance to Canada as a country. The way he portrays and talks about Canada is an anglo-centric portrayl at best and an amercanized western Canadian portrayal at worst. And no, they aren't almost all only in Québec. There are plenty in the maritime, Ontario, parts of Manitoba and then areas in the US as well. Is it a bigger part of Québécois culture, yes. The maple leaf was a generally good symbol for much of Camada though it does exclude much of Western Canada today. What would be a better symbol for the whole country? You tell me.
