One of my favorite things about this scene are the fireworks and people having fun in the background. It shows so well that you may be outside having a wonderful time with your family; yet, you don't know that the people 10 feet away from you are experiencing the worst day of their lives.

Especially when you either don't know why or because they themselves can't put it into words why they don't love you anymore. It sucks even more when you have an idea in the back of your mind on why but it's hard for your partner to put it into words because they know if they tell you. It will sound jacked up and paint them in a selfish negative light.

Derek Cianfrance is a master storyteller. The fact he spent 10 years trying to get this film made and ultimately was not paid to make it makes him an absolute legend. It’s not 10 year marketing BS like other directors say. It was 10 hard years of trying to find financing and getting the actors.

The first time I watched this, my heart broke for Dean. Watching it a few years later, I understood Cindy’s reasons for ending the marriage. Although she fell madly in love with him, after years of a dead end job painting houses, becoming an alcoholic (he states he has the luxury of having a job that allows him to drink first thing in the am and throughout the day), and not aspiring to grow together academically and/or financially; she fell out of love with him. The embarrassing scene he causes at her place of employment doesn’t help his cause either. Not to mention, she was basically disgusted at the thought of being intimate with him. Her clenching her fists in disgust was an obvious sign that there was absolutely no love left for him on her part. It was such a sad movie. This movie and “Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” were difficult movies for me to watch after a breakup with someone I truly loved, but had hurt so deeply. I was such a selfish bitch during the relationship. I deserved all the pain that came with them finally having the courage to leave me, all while I realized way too late that I actually really loved them more than I realized. Never take someone for granted. They eventually grow tired of your shit.

I'm in the exact same boat, except it's the complete opposite scenario, he takes me for granted. I worship the ground he walks on, I deal with his quick-trigger temper, I wave off his often hurtful "jokes" with a smile, he'd rather play on my consoles than talk to me, he goes out on the weekend and leaves me behind. He proposed to me last year, and since then it's all just falling apart ... 5 years and I don't think I can be with him much longer. I have a love/hate relationship with this film and ending, because it's so true, everyone's relationship starts off sweet and beautiful but given time those rose tinted glasses come away and you see that person for who they are - and vice versa. It's a sad concept really T-T

Man… the daughter’s innocence, not knowing why her father is walking away, but knowing that something is wrong, begging him to stay. Dean walking away in silence as the fireworks go off, that joyful sound is now tainted. Cindy comforting her daughter as she says “I love him” knowing that she did too at one point. It’s all over. This shit is heart breaking. Two people who spent years trying to build a life together, but it all came crashing down. It leaves a bitter sweet taste in your mouth, it’s beautiful at first, and sad at the end, confusing in general.

It amazes me how much controversy this film generates, to me it's obvious that they are both wrong. It's in a woman's nature to seek security, there's nothing wrong with that. I believe that men are more physically attracted to women, and women are more mentally attracted to men. If Dean loves Cindy as much as he claims, then he should try harder to provide her what she needs. If Cindy loves Dean as much as she claims, then she should try to go easier on him and inspire him. They are both too simple-minded and weak to really understand each other and take a correct course of action. I cry rivers every time I see this movie. I fully sympathize them both, although-thank God-I've never had to live something like that.

Well, physical attraction isn't enough in the long run, both men and women rely on it in the first stages of a relationship/interaction but long term you either get to be mentally attracted to a person or whatever is between you fades away and you don't end up forming a relationship. I think you're kind of underestimating mens' emotional intelligence. A lot of men and women need security wether they end up finding it on family/friends or in a partner. Most relationships between men and women (but also same sex relationships) last long term because of mutual trust, friendship and emotional comparability (+the circumstances being right, for example proximity, work ect). Men desire most of the things women do and they're just as emotionally intelligent.

It's a perfect ending-a heartbroken child desperately trying to keep her family together. It's not her job, it's not her responsibility, and yet still she tries. It exposes so well the selfishness of most divorces, the utter self-centerdness so many adults exhibit when they destroy their families and ruin their childrens' lives. Very raw, very real movie.
@carloscruz2918

In this case, I think it was best for Frankie in the long run. It wouldn't be healthy to watch your parents hate each other for the next 18 years of life. It's not a good example, and it can cause the child a lot of mental troubles as they develop. It's a lesser of two evils. Also, if they stayed together, the mental health of the parents would just continue to deteriorate and would also negatively affect the upbringing of Frankie. She is definitely better off with her parents' split, based on this fictional but very real situation.
