Not only the dial, but the Oyster bracelet is not period-correct and I suspect the bezel insert is also not period-correct (the font is too narrow)

Austin, I walked into the AD in Boston and spoke with the store manager. I told him about the CPO program. It shocked him. He told me he had not heard about it, but he treated me really good after that. He asked me where I got the information. I said from my friend out of Japan. I told him that I like the idea. Who wouldn't want to buy a Rolex from an AD with a warranty card. I think he knew then that I was a watch guy and not a flipper. When anyone goes to Boston. Visit the AD and talk to the store manager. He is a really cool guy.

agreed austin. i'd leave it. 65 gmt 1675 means it should be a gilt dial.

hey Austin, I got a call from my AD this morning but not for the exact piece I was looking for. Back in Dec 2021, I put in my interest for the steel Exp1 to get for my dad. Today AD offered the two tone but I declined. Didn't realize the two tone retail was so high and gray market prices are basically at retail

I think I'd pass on it, and hold out for the SS model. I feel like they'll get you that SS Explorer.

I have a 1959-60 1675 GMT Master OCC, bezell was replaced 30 years ago with authentic Rolex Bezell. Otherwise its in pretty good shape, has sat in a drawer for 30 years. Trying to get a realistic idea of the value. I see them online from $40K all the way up to $80K +.

Sounds like an amazing piece. Do you have box and papers? The more documents, receipts, and packaging you have the more valuable its going to be.

@@watchsymposium No paperwork or box. But an interesting back story. My Father was a pilot in the Air Force. He was in flight school in the early 60's and traded a radio he had for the watch, which another pilot owned. So the watch has been in the family since around 1963. He wore the watch on combat missions over Vietnam in 1970.

Check out the fuchsia 1675 insert at 5:19. It's all the way to the left (number 77) and going for nearly 10,000 USD! For the record, this is a really well priced 1675. If I had some old parts laying around - an authentic early hand set, insert, and dial - that needed a home. I'd seriously consider buying this piece to use them in. Also: There's a person imitating me - it's a total scam. Don't fall for it. There's only one way to contact me, and that's via my email address in the description of the video.

A 1965 GMT should also have a gilt dial, if that watch had the original dial, hands and rivet bracelet with original papers it would be close to $50k USD. So for the $20k, your getting what you pay for. This all goes down to budget, if you want all original your going to pay at the top end of the spectrum. If you want to enjoy a serviced vintage with real Rolex parts for $20k then it's not a bad deal.

Correct - almost everything on the watch is a replacement: dial, hands, bracelet, bezel insert, and also the bezel itself (wrong type of grooves). (Maybe also the date wheel - not sure.) Unless this is intended as a project (in which case good luck sourcing a correct dial - not impossible but no easy job), then it’s a definite pass. For $20k you could get a later matte dial variation without all of the problems.

Whats up the the Iconaut these days Austin? Is it getting some wrist time? Miss seeing it. Thanks for the video and keep the great content coming.

Thanks Glenn - I really need to give it, and the Hydronauts, some wrist time. I was actually thinking about that the other day. Because I wear one watch for such long stretches, a lot of my watches get neglected for months at a time.

Like you said, that's what you did in the 1980s. Rolex is now ensuring their watches will never really get that patina (white gold and ceramics) that we all love. Totally agree though, to fill in a spot in a killer collection this probably isn't the one. Cool watch though 👌 😎

Timelessness is a quality in the evolution to perfection……regardless of the replaced dial……I love it❤️❤️❤️👍😍. Gorgeous piece. Despite the fact every diamond has it’s flaws this Rolex is no different. RSC……obviously had no issues with the improvements.

Hi Austin, the early 1675 root beer “no crown guards” had alpha hands and also stick hands which is most likely what the packaging was depicting

Thanks Henry - you're absolutely right! A viewer emailed me a picture of that watch right after I uploaded this video - indeed, it had alpha hands (as opposed to dauphine), a nipple dial, and a tapering second hand. Awesome piece of GMT history!

A number of aspects of this watch’s story simply don’t add up. The chamfers on the lugs look a bit too sharp to have endured even one RSC mid-80s polishing. This leads me to believe that the case have been laser welded and re-polished. This is a modern technique and makes me wonder just where this piece was last worked on and when. Additionally, it calls into question the legitimacy of the related ephemera, etc.. I recall Eric Wind emphasizing that he always buys vintage based upon originality and condition and, in this instance, this is sage advice indeed.

As a long time vintage Rolex collector, i’d say get a period correct piece in a nice acceptable condition. Do not overpay for all the gimmicky papers and stories. Dont look for a new watch in a vintage. Look for the perfection in the imperfection cos only those who understand will understand. Thos who dont, dont matter.

"...get a period correct piece in a nice acceptable condition. Do not overpay for all the gimmicky papers and stories." Great point - all the knick-knacks are nice, but they should take a backseat to the piece itself.
