Philip P. Bliss (1838-1876) was born in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, USA. After leaving home, he labored as a farm hand and worked in lumber camps for some time, all the while taking musical training. Philip Bliss, then in his mid-to-late 20's then began working as an itinerant musician and music teacher, making house calls on horseback. During summers, he attended the Normal Academy of Music in Genesco, New York, where Bliss discovered and developed his music writing skills. His first piece was published in 1838. Philip P. Bliss went on to write many fine tunes, poems. and hymns. "Almost Persuaded" is no doubt his best known work. The music and lyrics are both his, published in 1871.
Bliss's beautiful tune has been borrowed for other sets of lyrics, including "Still Undecided" by Fanny J. Crosby, and, "Close To The Kingdom."
