I heard and saw the results of a "it's diesel so you don't need to worry about purging it", it was a Cat 777 tank, he was lucky that he got a few feet cut before it blew, still made everything round and therefore scrapped the tank, but didn't kill anyone.

The fumes are what kill us , usually I will remove the caps on any fuel or hydraulic tank and if possible, I’ll leave them sit outside a day to help fume off whatever is in there, hydraulic and diesel tanks. Don’t typically explode from welding, but they can !we measure the oxygen level in the tank , no oxygen no boom. Gasoline tanks are to be treated differently ,gasoline fumes for quite some time. Sometimes I will stick the exhaust from a vacuum cleaner in a gas tank and let it run for two or three hours, and then I will probably put argon in it before I weld it, that’s how I was taught to do it, and I’ve never had a problem, never put water in a tank, thinking it can’t blow up, by putting water in the tank, you can condense the fumes to a small area and create a bomb, fuel tanks are dangerous, and not for everybody to weld on.
@marklazar2415

Peterbilt tank doesn’t need purging, your repair needs 3/16 “ plate matching where it’s cracked going down about 6” by 10” wide . Take fittings out before welding they can galled themselves when you take them out to redope . The reason weld broke was the Equiflow pipes going into tank move with the slosh of fuel, been bad set up from begging, worse since PacCar bought them out .. When tank crakes by seam drill ends grind crack weld grind flat take 3/16” 3003 Aluminum bend to shape 12” length at least 2” wider on each end of crack clamp in and weld .

here in the northeast it's common for them to corrode holes where they mount,the repair is to 'band' the tank with a 5 or 6 inch wide strip around the circumference. As long as the vessel is 'open'-fuel cap off,plugs out-there is no need to purge them. All they do is smoke a little at best,diesel is pretty inert.

Ran a piece of exhaust flex pipefrom the welder's exhaust into,the fill port on the tank.started the welder after a minute I ground off the tag cleaned the area,welded on the patch and tacked the mfg.tag back on .
