This is a kind of odd comment, but just before Bourdain died I found Rinella. I am an avid reader, chef and outdoorsman and Tony had been my totem for a decade at least and his shows were like a beautiful frame hung around stories of people I would never meet. His death was pointless and sad and for a time I also thought it was the end of empathetic and poetic Gonzo journalism. Then I found out zero point zero has produced a show that the guy who was on Rogan had made. I think Steve and meat eater as a whole exactly embody what Tony saw as perfect travel journalism and I would just like to offer this weird testimony as thanks to everyone involved. Ed. BTW whoever picked these two dudes to go fishing together is a genius.

Couldn't agree more, Michael! Excellent comment. I've worked as a cook for a number of years and recently - in my mid-30s - fallen in love with the outdoors and started hunting. Rinella's books, podcast, and show have been huge for me, especially in light of Bourdain's passing. Thanks for this insight. I don't think I'd really made that connection in my head before. Bravo!
@jonpaul6948
5 жыл бұрын
Bourdain didn't "pass", he killed himself. It's one of the most selfish things a person can do, and you people need to stop comparing Steve to that asshole. This wasn't some "tragedy that could have been prevented if we were just more aware of mental health" or however they sold it, it was a horrible act by a person who obviously didn't give a damn how their actions effected people who cared about them. Stop trying to canonize the man, "he was my totem". He was the host of a tv show that you liked, and perhaps an author you enjoyed. Jfc people are nuts, holding up some mentally ill prick as a comparison like it's a COMPLIMENT!

Excellent series so far. I've always loved the way Steve narrates through his episodes. It goes to show you, you don't need a $60,000 bass boat or center console to get the job done. Most fishers (like me) fish on a beer budget and do some of the very same mods to their boats (the poling platform is on my list). Been a fan of Steve's since the Travel Channel days.

You are right about urban rivers. Mr. Rinella is a Michigan native, as am I. I spent a couple years in Mt. Pleasant, home to CMU. I also worked at the wastewater treatment plant, in the lab, for a summer. I caught quite a few smallmouth, pike, and even a 24" walleye within 20 yards of the effluent pipe. I ate many of them, and am still alive to tell about it. The best thing is that I only saw one other angler in all the times I fished there.
