Thank you! I just published my first book and am on a steep learning curve. You are absolutely right! There are a lot of misunderstandings about reviews, and generally among my followers - - and, obviously, yours, too! - - many who misunderstand are the same ones who think they have have a handle on all the ins and outs of reviews. It’s why I wrote the third in my multi award -winning HowToDoItFrugally Series on reviews. I don’t however recommend paying for reviews. It’s about journalistic ethics-and not impressing professionals in the publishing industry anyway. And, hey! Kudos to your daughter. She has a terrific subject to work with!

Dave, there's still a little confusion about the word "advanced." Is that simply in advance of writing a review, or is in advance of publishing the book. Because after the book is published, a copy of the book might be considered a bribe. I want to leave you a review here. When I first started writing 4 years ago, I read all the expert advice I could find. And it all made sense to me. But now that I sell more books than most of those experts, I've realized that much of this advice was hooey (guess I'm showing my age since that's the first word that came to mind). BUT... Dave Chesson's information has always remained useful and informative. 5-stars

There are two places where Amazon publicly states something that I think will make this clear: 1. Amazon (Mr. Chee Chu) stated that they prohibit the sending of a product in return for a reviews, but specifically said they allowed books to be sent for a review. 2. In Amazon's FAQ about Reviews, to the question "Can I pay someone to write a review," Amazon responded with "No. We don't allow any form of compensation for a review, other than a free copy of the book provided upfront." So, with two direct public statements by Amazon, I think it's safe to say that the word "advanced" means sending the book in advance...not in advance of the publishing of a book. Plus, sending a book in advance is not a bribe. Links to the sources for these are in the Video description above. I hope that helps. And thanks for the review - that totally makes my day :)

Hey Dave - I have two specific questions related to reviews from my book launch team that I can't seem to find straight answers to. 1) Is it important to have them first actually BUY the book so their reviews can be "Amazon Verified Reviews?" It will be easier to instruct them (and they're probably more likely to leave a review) if I don't ask them to go through the extra steps to first BUY the book... But I will if it helps significantly. 2) In terms of timing, is it better (or possibly worse) to have them (purchase and) review the book while it's in pre-release instead of waiting until release day?

Hi This was a heck of an eye- opening vid that got me thinking all morning since it turns over everything I thought I knew about getting reviews. I thank you so much for having posted it. Just two questions: 1)as this is from 2017 does it still apply after the recent updates to Amazon's terms and conditions? I thought this freebie/review book exception got nixed in the recent updates. 2) NetGalley question (Netgalley article link brought me here): I read with interest your kindlepreneur article about NetGalley (but couldn't find a contact link). I wonder if there was any chance of a misprint? In explaining the benefits of NetGalley, you wrote, "That means that your book could get reviewed by a local blogger and posted on a popular site as a result." As a new author, I'd really hope the ARC of the book does not get posted to any site, but rather the link to purchase it on Amazon would. Yet that's not what's there. Otherwise, why do it if the review's not going to funnel viewers back to the publisher's sales page?

Great video, Dave -- as per usual. One lingering question, though: Can we send out an ARC while the book is available only through Kindle Unlimited? I know that Zon wants to be the sole source of distribution for KU authors, but does that mean that ARCs can't be sent out via email?
@Kindlepreneur
5 жыл бұрын
That's a great question and to tell you the truth, I'm not 100% sure. My belief would be that you can't give an ARC out while on KU. I'd say that because I've seen where people got hit by Amazon due to offering their book on their website (both paid and as an email opt-in).

Hi Dave, super insightful and helpful. 1. Is this still valid in 2020? (I read the content in the links below and it seems to be the same) 2. Do I have to get my ARC team to buy the book? I've heard rumors that Amazon removes book reviews if people didn't buy the book. Sounds weird, but I wanted to check. 3. I also heard Amazon adds a timestamp when you purchase a book, so if someone buys it and immediately reviews it (because they had an advance copy) Amazon removes those reviews. Any idea if that's true? Thanks for everything that you do to help authors!
@Kindlepreneur
4 жыл бұрын
1. Absolutely 2. No, they do not. Their review is marked as Unverified though. 3. There are a LOT of things that goes into Amazon's algorithm to deciding if a review should automatically be removed. Some theorize that a purchase and immediate review is one of them, but it isn't a sole factor that automatically and always triggers.

This is now June 2018. Zon has deleted thousands of VERIFIED PURCHASE reviews. You are NOT allowed to say: this is my fav author/I love this author/no personal reviews. They have really come down on honest reviewers. I think the only way around this is "pre-orders". Oh, and if you say you got an ARC etc-you are done. Dave: Excellent Video on Amazon Reviews. The real challenge after you send a copy of your book to friends for a review, is how to get it as "verified purchase review"? You either have to reduce it down to 99 cents for a day or two, or make it completely free so they can go to Amazon and order it. However, if I upload it to the Editorial Section, then I don't need to worry about having them order a copy through Amazon? I can just receive their review directly, then up load it myself? Is this ok to do within Amazon rules?

They follow Amazon tos and will list they received the book for free." snpy.in/t3NNJU . I am a bit confused now. Do the reviewers "choose" how to list it? and is it against the TOS to list a free download as a purchase?
@Kindlepreneur

What he meant to say is that "the review won't be seen as "verified" on Amazon." No, they do not choose how it is listed...amazon automatically does. He's just saying that because the reviewers will not purchase the book, it won't be seen as verified.

There are lots of reasons why that could be the case. Sometimes, if you haven't purchased enough product but have left a lot of reviews, or Amazon believes that you're reviewing products or books of people you know, or they have reason to believe that you have violated their TOS, they will remove the ability for your Amazon account to leave reviews.

@@Kindlepreneur I buY mu sudoku puzzle books on Ebay. It's always cheaper than Amazon. Thriftbooks sells thru Ebay. Why do you see a book for say 3.98 then see the same book again listed for 200.00.? I see these crazy book prices alot. Makes no sense. I saw one book for nearly 1000.00.

@@robertclark4929 True but many shoppers prefer Amazon because they usually have better shipping and more reliability. Amazon's a bit more controlling...haha. As for pricing, that could be for a multitude of reasons.
