Maybe he is nothing more than just another Rascal in Paradise? It is hard to separate truth from fiction in a case like this. My guess is that he was just a HuaPing, a Figurehead for the school, maybe a token white guy to market the school...or not. However, it certainly would be interesting to get an unbiased, unvarnished account of the STORY behind the façade. It is easy to come to a new country and tell tall tales because any tale told is more difficult to discredit, and so anyone can say anything with almost total impunity. Still...another good video from this channel, as usual.

This is the second interview with a guy who has been deported where I don't feel any emotional investment with them at all even though they went through a bad experience. I guess it's how they invite chaos in their life. Chaos answers, "Here I am!". Sad 😢 ETA: Pete, you're a nice guy who always prepares for his interviews. You deserve better than a guy who gives you only a portion of his attention and eats, drinks, and smokes while you try to do your job. You deserve full attention, don't take anything less
@DavidDeFrain

I agree with the lack of emotional investment, as this mans has made his own choices. Although regarding the eating, smoking, and drinking. I feel as though that adds a significant amount of realism as though it were a real conversation. I can see how you think it’s sloppy, but it contributes to the character development of this mans. You can assume how he goes through life in this manner.

One of the problems with exaggerators and liars is that they sometimes tell the truth. In his case, many of these kinds of things do happen in Thailand, Laos and PRC China but he's got a pathological need to tune, twist and embiggen the events so they become about him, him being special, him being astonishing, grand, mysterious and all this selfish nonsense. - It's true that if you overstay your visa and work illegally in Thailand they may even ignore you for a while until eventually a standard easygoing by-the-book police patrol picks you up. - It's not true that he was double-crossed in some inexplicable corporate plot and a 'Swat team' cornered him as if he would have escaped if he could on some motorcycle chase were ya? - It is true that some business in China would hire a 'White Monkey' and take him to investor meetings and yes under that pretense of hiring a corporate English teacher. This actually is a shady gig and yes they'll drive you out to some hotels in various cities. Unfortunately, a lot of new recruits in China are just like him and believe they are hired to do corporate English classes, for real. He still doesn't seem to be aware he was hired for a 'fake American partner' role. - It's true he had to work in a downtown school and a distant campus and it undoubtedly took up hours and hours of his time and yes this would be 7 days a week. (offset by a stupid number or long holidays in China). - It is not true that he started and owned these businesses. There is no such thing in China though it's possibly his wife and her family owned part of these businesses. He did not start 2 schools. - It really is true that marital love in China is very different and he shows love by income and 'longsuffering' in the work fields but the other problem is that he led her to believe he was a financially successful man with a stable income and all kinds of big business in the USA and then she found out he did not have any such things. Then she is royally effed for her social status. It IS true that Chinese wives will carry out terrible physical violence and attacks on their husbands. - It IS true that Chinese will do the most ridiculous 'falling down' thing. - It's true that he would be temporarily held in a Chinese jail. - It's NOT true that somehow a politically rebellious insider smuggled him inside the odd KFC chicken but instead, because he's a foreigner, the generally good natured police ordered him KFC in jail. He was allowed to walk a hallway for exercise. He was NOT chosen to be a prison boss as some idiotic 'sign of prison cred and respect' Ffs. - Yes, you can find 'homegrown' marijuana in Laos from Tuk Tuk drivers and yes he would be coughing from smoking copious amounts because this is actual natural marijuana grown in a pot on someone's balcony and he needed to smoke 'copious amounts' of very very harsh marijuana before you'd get the 'high' of the modern street-weed. - China's lockdowns were utterly insane but he was not once again the special target of a small army of swat and covid cops but rather just happened to live there as they did routines. so this is the problem: BS-tellers rob everyone of finding meaningful and helpful advice. There are things that some viewers *could have* been helped by knowing but instead they won't be able to tell what's what, what selfish aggrandizing and what is a proper ahole who uses people for his own ego and so on.

This guy is a pothead, high as a kite during this interview. My opinion is this fellow overestimated his hand negotiating with the Thai school, had no leverage due to his expired visa, and became a right pain in the rear, enough to piss off the school to the point of seeing an easy out of kicking him out of Thailand. So, then he goes to China and messes around inviting trouble because he cannot help himself. The early success of running the Chinese schools was just a veneer. He cannot help but thumb his nose at authorities. He may know some of the lay of the land,but he is consistently out of synch with how power is administered in China. He simply makes too many enemies.

Great interview, I see no problem with the eating, drinking, and smoking during the interview...Much like sitting in a bar sharing a beer and swapping stories, this is reality...The adventures and misadventures are many with Matt, and not a dull moment...Interesting and dramatic life to now, good he's moved into something stable like growing marijuana haha! 😂

This guy Matt is a fun story teller. And yea, it is just like the guy you sit down next to and tells his great story. .. I've been that guy at times in my life. Wishing Matt all the best.

I would love to hear what really happened with this guy. He comes across as someone who will blame anyone but himself for the problems in his life. Not saying he’s lying but the way he tells his story sounds so bias it’s obvious he’s leaving out a lot of details lol

I think people need to understand that an interview is an interview. You take the person as they are and it made for a great interview. I don't care if they are eating. Its not rude. Dude is enjoying his dinner. He's obviously a busy guy on the go. Did he invite some troubles into his life? Yes. Haven't we all. At least it is something to learn from. I am very Happy i did not take a job to go and teach in China in 2019. Would have been hell to live there during Covid.

This is unrelated but last year I bought a new house and I was bidding against a chinese family who wanted to buy for their grandparents. They offered 20,000 AUS dollar in cash to sell to them In an envelope . I know this because the owners were very angry about it and they told me upon the sale going through to me . I had to take out a morgage unfortunalty and over bid them by 35,000 dollar to get my now home . The Chinese family backed off and although I paid way over market value at the time I have that equity back now . Dont anyone call me rascist because I am not .

Don’t point out that vast swaths of residential property is left unoccupied while we are going through a housing crisis. Wouldn’t want to be accused of racism … China knows it’s the Achilles heel of the West

A bit late to the party but what a dead beat of a guy. He's the sort of teacher we used to see in a corner bar on Soi Rambuttri in Bangkok night after night totally wasted. This was in late 1990's for probably next 10 years.

Great interview Pete 👍🏻 Alas Not many people in the comments below seem to like Matt but i for one feel sorry for what he had to go through being betrayed by so many people including his seemingly narcissistic chinesse wife although he kindly described her as having emotional depression whom he showed he cared about & said he really loved. he is your typical loud mouthed no nonsense American southerner or NY guy who unfortunately doesn’t speak or act subtly so steps on people’s toes or turns them off, but i prefer such people who are real in your face than people who are fake nice then who then stabs or bath mouths u in back.

You should have asked him his favourite song. Because I guarantee you it's Shaggy's 'it wasn't me'.🙄🙄. I wasn't hearing much accountability on his side. Seems like everything is always other people's fault while he's a totally stand up guy. Guess he's just very unlucky 🙄 And no, doing this interview while he talks at us non stop with a mouthfull of spring rolls doesn't make him "real" it just makes him rude. The interview was arranged well in advance I have no doubt. You didn't just randomly call him hoping for an interview and unfortunately caught him at dinner. So this was his choice. No one's that busy or that important that they can't set some time aside when they are not stuffing their face. This was the classic 'tell' of a very arrogant yet somewhat paradoxically, deeply insecure person. I've met people exactly like him before.

Wow what a character and probably brings a lot of crap upon himself. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy but his type tends to find trouble like my younger self. Oh and Trump runs his mouth way to much but he was right. I have a hard time watching people eat and almost had to stop watching. Lol
