I came upon this video tonight after watching a PBS production on The Burren area of Ireland. One of the native plants in that area is a relative, the Corylus avellana, which looks a lot like the americana species (we have those growing wild in our yard too). Your video popped up after a I searched for the Irish species ... yes! And I have to add that I really like hazelnut flavoring in coffee, too!

Nice video Santino - I supposedly have hazelnut bushes in the backyard. They aren't doing much but I found this fascinating - I love hazelnuts and chocolate!

I have not been able to find out why my American Hazelnut shrub leaves keep turning brown & crunchy every summer. It gets adequate water, not too much. Would you have any information on this issue and how to correct it?

I've tried a green "black walnut" before, having taken it directly from a low hanging branch, i was able to cut open the outside later to reveal the nut and upon cracking it i was able to find a soft version of the "nut" which was actually more of a membrane containing a juicy center. I would like to do this again and study which water soluble nutrients are still within it before it hardens; i have a hard time believing that it's not healthier when fresher directly from the tree at a certain peak time.
