The species Solanum americanum is popularly known in Brazil as maria-pretinha or nightshade. It is a plant originating from the American continent and occurs throughout all regions of Brazil as a native species. This species also occurs in introduced form in other parts of the world.
Black maria (Solanum americanum) can be consumed, as long as the fruits are completely ripe. Its leaves can also be consumed sautéed or cooked.
