The species Mimosa pudica is a plant of American origin, it occurs from Mexico to Brazil, and was introduced in some African and Asian countries. In Brazil, this plant can be known as dormideira, maria-dormideira, maria-fecha-porta, dormi-joão, não-me-toque, sensitive plant, among other names.
The sensitive plant serves as a medicinal plant due to its active ingredients with therapeutic properties. This plant has been used for various treatments in different countries and since ancient times.
Several studies have already been carried out with Mimosa pudica and confirmed many medicinal properties corroborating the popular uses made of it.
Studies have also been carried out to find out whether the sensitive plant is toxic, and according to some researchers, the plant can be considered safe for consumption as it has not shown signs of toxicity in animal tests at different dosages.
