@ashleps I’m an old bugger who owned an LJ XU-1, an LX SLR5000 (alas not an A9X) & an E38 Charger, all of which I stupidly sold many years & way way too few dollars ago. Watching Peter Perfect drive in that ‘79 race was the absolute epitome in my book - never gonna be topped. But those ridiculous Weber-packed 6’s I had brother...the sound has never left me. The A9X was basically Holden's reaction to Ford's domination of the championship in 1977. That humiliation finally got Holden off the couch and throwing resources at the Torana to turn it into the car it really should've been all along. The engine was actually the same Holden 308 that had powered the SL/R 5000 before it; it was the other stuff that made the real difference. Rear disc brakes were overdue, as were proper axles and a diff strong enough to take full throttle from a 5.0-litre V8. Brocky gave it an unexpected victory on debut at the Sandown 500 in '77, but it was a false dawn, as Moffat took his Ford Dealers Team to a devastating 1-2 at Bathurst. The A9Xs mostly broke down. So, Holden pulled out the stops: from somewhere they found a budget to run the works team, put someone who knew how to run things slick in charge of it, and lured Brocky back to his home team with a huge salary. He was worth the money, though; in 1978 he became the first driver to win the triple crown of the ATCC, Sandown and Bathurst in the same year. In 1979 he wasn't able to repeat the feat, losing the ATCC to Bob Morris in another A9X. He managed to abscond with Sandown again (he was actually in the middle of a phenomenal winning streak at his home track, winning 9 Sandowns overall including 7 in a row!), then utterly destroyed the opposition at Bathurst. The team's engine shop had coughed up an absolute weapon of an engine, good for 390hp and the mechanical reliability of a rock. To avoid putting miles on it, they only did the bare minimum of laps in practice to qualify both drivers for the race, meaning they only did 27 laps in it before Sunday - including practice and qualifying! Indeed, in Hardie's Heroes, Brocky took pole with a time of 2:20.5 - not only a new lap record, but a massive 1.966 seconds faster than the poor bastard in 2nd, his ATCC rival Bob Morris. Point made. Then on race day, the green flag waved, Brocky stomped on the accelerator and drove off. By the end of the first lap he was 3.4 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, and from there he just drove off into the distance. When he came in for his first pit stop, they spent roughly two minutes refuelling and re-tyring the car (pit stops were not swift affairs in those days - refuelling was done with big milk churns!), but even so he rejoined without losing the lead. By the end of the day, he was six laps - 23 miles - ahead of second place, a winning margin we will never see again. And as you saw, he deliberately reset the lap record on his last time around, just to rub it in. Years later - like New Millennium later - the Bowdens who now owned his priceless racecar asked him to do a demonstration run against a current V8 Supercar and one of the latest HSVs. They forgot to swap out the short diff for the extra-tall one used at Bathurst, however, meaning he was chronically short on top speed down Conrod. Even so, Peter had the presence of mind to lift and hold the revs, for which the Bowdens were very grateful - blowing the priceless '79 engine would not have been a good look! And of course, not a lot later Peter crashed in WA and died. So it was a nice consolation that his final lap of Bathurst came in his favourite car, the Holden Dealer Team's '79 LX Torana A9X.

@@5lcalais1 not sure if you have ever seen the co driver speaking after the accident he spoke about when the car got loose and started to head into trouble he said that Peter actually somewhat controlled the out of control sliding car to position the car so that the co driver would not take the brunt of the force and he felt that Peter had actually put himself in danger to save the co drivers life the co driver was very emotional as he was the only one there with Peter and only he knows what Peter did to save his life.

I've been watching Bathurst for 40 years and loved all the early years of driver talents. My favorite was Larry Perkins, a Bathurst winner on multiple occasions. He coined the phrase "mechanical sympathy" and I have subscribed to that in my steel fabrication work as well as driving and mountain bike racing ever since. Glad you like this Aussie brilliance that I've been proud of for the 45 years I've lived in Australia. I'm proud of a heck of a lot of down to earth realism we have and share in Australia,,, and I'm British!

I've been in a car with Brocky at Darlington Park in Brisbane amazing experience and he really did drive like it was a Sunday cruise. It was effortless for him so he'd talk to everyone we had in the car & glance at the track occasionally & turn around & talk again. Scared the shit out of a couple of women that day 🤣

Yep that is why he is called The King of The Mountain, that classic 308 A9X Torana SS is still a lovely sound to hear as every now and then they are dragged out to do a charity run or a guest drive on The Mountain. He won by 6 Laps to 2nd place that year and set the lap record on that last lap. I loved it when they did a camera cross to Brocky him sitting with his arm on the window sill chatting while travelling like a bullet down Con Rod Straight. Great memories of the Great man Thanks mate for showing The King in his great era 9 times winner never to be forgotten

The L34 variant in this and the ealrier LH had a lot of prework performed by Repco and that engine also was the basis of the Formula 5000 open wheelers that ran in that era. I think the famous Hall of Famer, Frank Matich also ran it in his SR4 sports car.

Peter Brock was referred to as Peter perfect. An amazing driver with incredible personality. Available to fans and a true gentleman. Ironically he died in an driving event, diving a Daytona which were designed by a US Peter Brock.

One of the most memorable events in Bathurst history. Even my mother was cheering at the time. Bathurst converting my Mother to a once a year race fan like many in Australia. Peter Brock driving the legendary Holden LX Torana SS A9X Hatchback to first place ahead of another seven Toranas filling places one to eight. Last Bathurst for Torana with rule changes next year. The the Peter Williamson Toyota Celica next but a long way back. The heavy Falcon hardtops were even further behind as by this time they were outclassed the lighter Toranas as was the single Camaro that failed to finish. Alan Moffat Falcon failed to finish. Maybe karma from being helped in qualifying by some murky rule application to help him out. Torana was one of the few cars sold with four , six or eight cylinder engine options.

@@adamlee9071 I didn’t know this was a pissing contest, probably best to learn some history as you seem to young to know much better, LC Torana GTR XU-1 in most real Australian opinions was a decent ride that beat most of the v8 Fords, unfortunately the fords brought out the XW series that took out Bathurst , light and quick but most of all reliable, as for the fords carrying way more weight were handicapped to start with, paddock bashed my HX, biggest pile of crap with a stirring wheel.

@@johnmathisen1167 the 308 was a holden engine, completely different to a chev, in the late 80,s it was reduced to a 304 to fit in the under 5l class and I think for tax classes, at the same time it received better heads but a restrictive injection system and was used until the early 2000's when it was replaced with the LS1 chev

Peter Brock was Australia's equivalent to Dale Earnhardt... Even if you were a Ford guy, you may not have liked him winning as much as he did (for obvious reasons) but you still had tons of respect for him because there was almost nothing he couldn't do on a race track. He transitioned from the smaller, lighter Torry to the bulkier Commodore seamlessly. An extraordinarily fit driver for his age when he retired too. A trip to the top of the mountain to see Brocky in October at least once in a young man's life was a rite of passage for Holden lovers. The roar of the crowd when he went past for the last time in first place was truly a thing of beauty. I couldn't help but quietly weep when I heard about his passing on that day. Aussies should all be thankful that at least he went out doing what he was born to do. Hard to put into words the impact on Aussie motorsport that man had.

I got hooked on Motorsport back in 1978. The first race I ever went to was at Symmons plains, in Tassie. I went there thinking I was a Moffat fan, came home an unrepentant Brock fan. Not only did that a9x Torana look the goods, it was the best sounding car I’ve ever heard. Brock won and spent about 3 hours afterwards in the pits signing autographs and talking to the fans. He was a true legend

I was at his last one at Mallala and it was the same there,, he said he wasn't leaving until everyone who wanted a photo or autograph got one and he did just that. I'll never forget that day we all got that news he died, I was absolutely shattered. A true blue Aussie legend. Still get a lump in the throat talking about him or watching certain footage.

I was a month off turning 6 when this race was on and yes, I was into Peter Brock and was drawing Toranas (When I could draw!) Of course I love my Torries as a result. Brocky dominated the race start to finish, 2nd place (Peter Janson and Larry Perkins was 6 laps behind and to show how strong the car was, he broke the lap record! And yes, it is a V8...a 308. Mum used to work at Reg Hunt Holden in Melbourne at the time (King Street City) and met up with Brocky.

@@5lcalais1 L34 was earlier, came in limited numbers in the LH model. L34 had many improvements over stock 308. L31 as used in the A9X was a standard production 308 with the mechanical fan removed.

PB on top of his game here. Drove it again around there for a speed comparison in '04. IWrocker, it's powered by a 308ci Holden engine, big solid cam, ported out original road car heads and intake manifold, with twin downdraught Webers. About 380hp Super T10 4 speed, and a top speed of 260kph here (160mph).

He was one hell of a driver man. Still now I can cry if I watch Brocky to much. I didn’t realise how much I loved him. As a young boy in Victoria, Australia you had footy and v8s. I grew up in the 80s. I’d ride for kilometres on my bmx just to see a peter brock commodore someone had in their driveway. Check out his early 80s commodores🇦🇺

My favourite race car, and the only one I have seen up close, it was amazing. I was ten when this race was on and I would sit there the whole day - the telecast started at 8am with warm-ups and finished somewhere around 5pm.

@@IWrocker OK then, since you like useless trivia ;) The A9X Torana was manufactured as a limited option run of road cars. Back in the day, to race a car in group C you needed to produce 5000 of the base model (Torana) and a minimum of 500 special edition models (The A9X option). The A9X option was basically just the things that the older Toranas didn't have, and needed, for racing. The older L34 option had a more powerful engine than the A9X but that was already homologated for racing, so they put stuff into the A9X like a 10 bolt Salisbury diff, rear disc brakes, different suspension arms, etc. They also offered a super tall 2.6:1diff ratio (For Bathurst) and a Borg Warner super T10 gearbox. A mate of mine had one (A 4 door), with an L34 spec engine, it would do 90 MPH in first gear

305 4 door sedans and 100 hatchs for sale to the public.There were also 11 sedans and 41 hatchs from GMP&A sold to race teams with no motor or gearbox

There is a later race and brockys driving a commodore it’s raining and the car is sliding through the corners and the commentator is interviewing him and he’s laughing like it’s nothing, hes fucking awesome

I love all the Torana's from LC up. This is one of the later models with a 308ci (5.0Lt) V8 and 4 speed manual. I used to own a 1970 LC Torana. Loved that car.

Thanks for making a video on the A9X Torana. The 308 V8, Borg Warner T10 Gearbox, Salisbury rear end and 4 wheel disc brakes were great gear for the late's 70's...it has nothing on the cars these days obviously, but back then it was an absolutely fantastic car and to top it all off it looked and sounded absolutely gorgeous. In the mid 80's I had a standard production one and loved it to death...such a magnificent car. That race was before they put The Chase into Conrod Straight too, cutting the speed at the end of the run down a tad...

The factory race cars for Bathurst had welded bodies 5 link rear end in stead of the 4 link like the 5000 suspension adjustable, the engine was different Yella terra heads ported etc balanced blueprinted motor different cams and headers. The race motors had roller cams different lift and timing etc higher revving and a lot more power with twin webber carbs long intakes and more power than standard 5000 motor. With the sprint cam option around 400 BHP + Cheers

The A9X was in a class of it's own back in '79. Even though I haven't been to the Bathurst race, I do have 3 connections to the great race. Firstly my family would sit down and watch the race each year. Secondly in '79 I was in 10th Form *(Moorebank High), and was working as a mechanic for work experience at Peter Williamson Dealership in Liverpool, N.S.W. Towards the end of the training, I actually got to work on his Bathurst '79 racecar mainly the brakes and suspension. Ironically the following year Peter Williamson car retired from the great race with brake and suspension problems. Thirdly, my connection to the Brock/Bathurst is personal. My mom did a family tree of her side of the family and there is a direct connection to Peter Brock. His mom's sister was an Aunt on the tree, thus making Peter Brock a relative of mine.

Pter Brock wqs a legend. He uised to drive Bathurst with his elbow resting on the window sill. He so relaxed and in control.

To be fair to those cars that got passed there were a few different classes of car racing in the one race, earlier(1960's ish) they were catogorised by price then later(70's on) it was based on cubic capacity of the engine if i remember correctly. Youve been nailing the vids lately mate, classic stuff.

Most dominating Bathurst win: pole position, lead every lap of the race even when in pit stops, won by 6 laps and got the lap record on the last lap!!! Will never be repeated.

For a few years during the mid to late 70's and early 80's, my Uncle Norm lived in the town of Orange, which is a short drive from Bathurst. My Uncle Norm and his friend drove to Bathurst to watch the 1979 Hardie-Ferodo 1000. My Uncle Norm said he can still remember hearing the sound of the cars, especially that A9X of Brock's, coming over the hill and down the straight. My Uncle Norm and his friend moved about a bit that day, and stood in a few different areas. He said it was an awesome day though. On a side note, my Uncle Jeff had an LX A9X Hatchback Torana. It was orange and black. My dad when he was younger had a standard LX four door sedan as his first car, it was originally his Uncle's car.

The A9X were head turners on the street along with the Falcon GTO’s and they both sounded great. I wish I’d had a chance to drive one. Bit young. There was also the Tirana XU1 - inline 6 but also fast. The cops in NSW used them as highway patrol and pursuit. There was a purple one (unmarked) in Armidale where I grew up and the cop who drove it wore almost complete leather; peaked cap, leather jacket and jack boots. We as young drivers were scared shitless when that car appeared in our rear view mirrors - happy days. I learned to drive in my mothers 351 Fairlane. I’m surprised I’m still alive.

Peter Brock was one of my heroes. Was a sad, sad day when we lost him. If you’d like to see the modern day Peter Brock, check out Craig Lowndes… he basically learnt everything he knows from PB

Been a fan of the Torana and Peter Brock since that day I was 9 years old then fortunately I have a Torana Hatchback in my shed today thanks to Peter Brock

I still get goosebumps when I watch him race. I was watching the Targa when he died. I thought the world was coming to an end. Rest well Peter. You were a bit of a kook with your crystal polarisers and never marrying Bev, but you were a great, great driver.

That is 100% an Australian muscle car it has a Holden 308ci V8 ,the A9X Torana was awesome and they didn't make many of them. If you have 1 today you are sitting on a lot of money, every Holden man's dream to own a A9X. The A9X was a 2 door and the SLR 5000 was the 4 door champ. All the best dude from Australia 🤙

Production cars races back in the days of Holden and Ford rivalry in Australia, the A9X was the homologated, uprated version of the LX SS Hatchback, 308 Ci (5 Litre), 90 degree V8 with 4 speed manual transmission, I actually had a Burnt Orange one with the 253 Ci (4.2 litre) V8 in 4 Speed manual with widened and chromed steel wheels, nice cars.

Brocky was a legend. He used the 05 number because he was a pioneer in getting the blood alcohol limit down from .08 to .05

The other great locally produced GM race car prior to the A9X was the Torana GTR-XU1. A 202 cubic inch 6 cylinder with triple carbs... smaller & lighter than the A9X. To race at Bathurst each manufacturer had to produce a limited run of 200. My uncle's mate in Sydney had one and visited my parents home on several occasions. On one visit there were 4 of us in the lime green colored beast and uphill on bitumen he smoked the tires in the first 3 gears going up a hill. He also owned at different times 2 other Bathurst specials... the Ford Falcon GTHO phase 3 & a Holden Monaro 2 door GTS. As a teenager all three cars simply blew my mind.

The car only did 27 laps in total before the race, that included in laps, out laps, practice, qualifying and top 10 shoot out. Its was all about presentation of the HDT cars, putting on tyre black and polishing the wheels with brasso. To say "we are the winners" before the race started.

Brock was one of those once in a lifetime drivers... Like an Ayrton Senna or and Andretti... They could just get so much more out of a car that anyone else.

Also, check out PB's first win at Bathusrt in a Torana XU1, this was a 3.3L (202cu) inline 6 cylinder pocket rocket, 1972. And my 3rd car is a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD 4.7L with Quaddrive 2 245 transfer case for boat towing and bush bashing.

Peter Brock died on my birthday, dad picked me up from school and my brother sends my dad a message saying Brocky died. Was a silent drive home. RIP Brocky
