IMHO the phone mic is designed and EQ'd to pic up voice mainly. coincidentally the guitar is also a mid voiced instrument. I've tried recording with my iPhone when rehearsing with my band.. the recording was awfull because the limiter inside the phone was limiting too much. But you can get away by recording only one instrument apparently. Great show guys as always
@NFMorley
5 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I've heard from trying it in the past (as well as in the video!) - i believe the frequency response envelope is typically around 80hz to 8khz for most consumer stuff which is a fairly useable range; but the compression, small diaphragms and voicing seem to make quite an impact. There's also a bit of a kick/bite around the low-mid frequenciestoo which I reckon must be to do with the mics being voiced to human speech - I wonder if these being emphasised is what made it sound pleasing to some people when watching the earlier video? It would seem like a fairly sensible design choice to focus phone/tablet speakers on optimal speech clarity/quality.

TPS has now transcended every other guitar/gear show on the Tube (or anywhere). That was just wonderful and so instructive. Along with everything else, I hope that everyone heard how the addition of the bass and drum tracks fundamentally changed the perceived sound of the guitar. Subtle echo and reflective sounds were masked and frequencies clearly heard when solo largely disappeared. I hope you guys discuss this further next time and continue to explore “What Are You Hearing?” when listening to music. You’re breaking new and higher ground. Nothing else even comes close. Cheers and may Zeus bless you.

This is such a masterfully crafted, planned and executed video! It covers so many topics and experiments and gives such detailed examples, not only of different types of microphones and how they work, but great examples of the importance of microphone placement and the way rooms colour a sound and our perception of that sound in a space. And how these principals all work in the context of a mix! All with beautiful playing and soaring guitar sounds. SO comprehensive, and I've thoroughly enjoyed this video! Secondly this video is a prime example of what you can achieve with a simple home recording studio, some decent mics and a facility to think a little out of the box. Hello guys!! Fasinating!!! Thanks for the effort running around and do all these setups. Straight of the bat, great show as always and more importent, human content. The mix of tech, tangients and your experiments is always entertaining and educational. I can only speak for myself in saying, that bloody lavatory sounded great with just the room mic alone. Not to mention the phone in the regular studio, very impressive! Dont want to dismiss the efforts of Mick busting his behind for giving us the best sound possible in the regular way, you do a great job Mick!! Dan, thanks for playing and dancing around with the, i hope it was a wig and not a floormop to clean the said lavatory with. To me, with headphones the sound at around 37 minutes was one of he best. Left and right plus the direct sound. I like a roomier sound in general, more like a hifi stereo with proper speakers. I gues that the very different types of head phones also have a bigger influence beyond the reach of the final mix. Yes no earbuds, full shell types are better. Point is, what experience in sound do you like us, your loyal victims to have? On stage with you, or more as an audience in front of the stage. Its about context and feel is it not? The sound of just a recorded guitar is not always most pleasing. As you say, it has to work in the mix ( band or otherwise). Since we are not with you in the same room i can see the point of the folks including myself saying that a roomier sound is nicer to the ears, especially with headphones. Besides, when i try and play guitar it is easier to be pleased with the sound made than having to listen to the recording of me playing the guitar. Making the experience or witnessing the experience is not the same thing. Its like being a airplane pilot, when in control never sick, being flown, puking my heart out. And, i much prefer to hear the amp from a distance than with headphones. When using headphones i use a bit more reverb on the sound since there is no room to fill, i have to make a room. Isnt it like when on stage, small room more reverb, big room less reverb? It goes without saying that you can not please everyone, personal preference is a big factor. Biggest and most important factor of all is your enthausiasm with wich you take us on a shared journey, it is what makes TPS such a great channel. Anyhows, having learned much once again, thanks and till the next video!! Cheers!! Ps, At first i was a non guitar playing subscriber but started guitar not so long ago. This channel keeps me motivated to go on. Besides, just the fun you have is eson enough to watch the channel. I do not care if i ever will be good at guitar, its more important to enjoy myself doing it. Seeyaa next time.

I must say that I'm convinced that recording TPS in your treated recording set is a much better option than either recording in the women's bathroom or your office. Good decision! :-) But seriously, it does show the improvement that room treatment has made. Another great show guys but mic'ing the amp made me think of a question, well a few. In all the things you have discussed that impacts your sound you all haven't discussed speakers all that much. Pete Thorn touched on this in your PT 15 IR vid. You have touched on the number of speakers 1x12 vs 2x12 vs 4x12, but not on the different types of speakers. How would different speakers in you amps/cabs impact things? How would an alnico blueback impact a tubescreamer sound compared to a greenback? Or a creamback with higher wattage? What about Jensen speakers (classic fender)? What do you all prefer for speakers, all the same or mix and match? Keep up the awesome work!

I’d love to see you guys do more of this as I find micing guitar amps the least interesting part of the recording process(I have most of my fun/experimenting with the drum setup). So it would be inspirational to see some interesting mic techniques explored within the channel! The Omni mic is awesome blended in with the close mics, it would be interesting adding an Omni mic to your set up, at the same height of the speaker - underneath the higher ms mics - letting the ms mics capture just the room and the Omni mic painting a picture of the size of the room. Awesome show, as always!

My latest mic setup, just some food for thought. Tweed Blues Junior and a Vibrosonic Reverb, SM57 beta and an Aston Starlight on each respectively only a few inches away. 45 inches away is a stereo pair of C214s in figure of eight for some depth and resolution. Complimenting that is a 57 tucked up near the ceiling for room sound and a bit of vibe. All recorded in a room probably a similar size to TPS. Remember to experiment!

Thanks for informing the public that your amp will sound different in different locations. The Omni mic in the office sounded best to me. Why? The amp was at an angle to the wall and not parallel. With an openback cabinet it's easy to get phase cancellation as the sound from the back of the cabinet bounces off the wall and joins the sound from the front. For anyone interested in using this technique try using a good set of headphones or in ear monitors then move the mic in the room to find your ideal placement. Sound is completely subjective and sometimes when blending sources a mic by itself might sound terrible but mixing it with a different mic can fill, widen, or focus your tone. Cheers

Love this episode, very interesting. I have to say though that anyone who says "why don't you just use a 57" has entirely missed the point of this video. It's about showing the differences between different microphones, we're not recording the guitars for an album. Not only the combination is usually sm57 and sennheiser 421, but it's also made for a purpose. The 5k boost (I believe it's around 6-7db) allows that mic to cut through a mix, making your guitar sound nice and punchy. Is it the natural sound of your amp? No. Is it what you hear when you play your amp? No. There's a massive difference between micing a guitar amp and making that sound nice or micing up a guitar amp and trying to achieve the same sound that the guitar amps have in the room when you listen to them at 6ft from them. This video is a really nice look at how different mics sound in different places, and that's a really valuable lesson for anyone who wants to get into recording guitars.

Had to let it stew for a little bit after watching this episode, there was a lot to soak in. The iPhone recordings sound amazing in the mix, and while not exact it’s really a classic technique and twist on the room mic. Mostly an acoustic/semi acoustic mic/mix trick of having a mic over the shoulder to pick up what the player hears vs what you hear in other parts of the room, you get some of the (for lack of a better descriptor) tactile sound which breathes a little extra life into a performance. Really only works in a controlled environment, although Les Paul did involve a XLR input for a dynamic mic on one of the experimental 70’s non traditional series. Thank you for feeding my mind on the way to a 3 day all local festival.

I'm a fan of low wound, vintage style pups myself. But, then I tried the DiMarzios (Area '58neck, '67middle and '61 bridge) and wow! They sound and feel great. If you like Andy Timmons' Strat tone, and I know you do lol, you'll like these! Then slap a good relic'ed neck on there and have Schwang! Just a suggestion from a fellow tone chaser. Btw thanks for the reply brother. God bless!

a pedal on its own can't capture sound ;-) unless maybe you have a preamp pedal with direct-out

This is just the "tip" of how much can be done with the mic's. Mick you do a great job mixing the audio and trust me it pays off. Don't let the haters get to you. You did forget to mention that viewers should subscribe and ring the "bell"....hahaha

Great show guys! Perhaps for future shows where you rely on mixing the audio before you can hear the results you might consider doing a quick recap with your comments afterwards. It's awesome hearing all these comparisons, but it would be great to also hear what you guys have to say about the outcomes. Thanks again for such great content.

Great episode! Loved getting to hear the effect off different mics in different rooms. And I hope y’all know we love the way you mic and capture guitar sounds!!! Great job! I would, however, be remiss if I didn’t say I hope next week’s episode is back to its proper length of 60 minutes, plus. Ignore the haters guys. The world is moving toward long form discussion, and we love your platform in particular! Cheers from Texas!!!
